We trail ride ours, use them to work live stock, and use them to work other horses (ponying/roading). I cant imagine only using them for dogs and FT, we ride most of ours 2-3 days a week (if not more) and I feel like we have better horses as a result.

I would say that my favorite breed is quickly becoming the sarplaninac. we have 2 on the farm for livestock guarding purposes. They are both closet clowns when your not looking. Nothing like watching a 125lb dog play with a litter of kittens when your not looking. But there will always be a GSP or 6...

Probly not what your looking for, but when Im running dogs around home I will use my 16ft stock trailer and close the devider, dogs in the front horses in the back. i just let the dogs free range in the trailer though.

Most of the trials you see where a dog must point for 5sec, or whatever, are shoot to retrieve or other tourny type trials. I would say that if you go to those trials and watch you will find that most of the competitors at the higher levels expect MUCH more from their dogs. Dont let that 5sec point ...

While I agree that retrieving is a big part of of hunting, I hate having to depend on someone elses shot at the end of the day when I have spent my $. I also agree that the dog should do what its supposed to do, but at some point you are setting a dog up for failure by repeating the same BS scenario...

If a call back goes cleanly I suppose it is an OK way to go about it. But I was at an FT last spring and a really nice little GSP had 6 birds put out for call back that were either missed or flew off in an unsafe direction. Bird #7 the dog just blew up. Sorry sir. I would say you are off to a good start. I let mine run and bump till they vet tired of chasing for the first year. Have fun, see what you like and don't like, start training in the spring. Depends on the collar. Our hounds used to wear heavy collars all the time. Harness or bridle leather is pretty good stuff it will last quite a while in all conditions. Cheap leather collars are just that.

It really depends on the dog and what it is used to. for a 1yo dog hunting every day, all day might be a little much. Especially with a young dog that hasnt really learned how to pace himself. I know that with my dogs, It usually takes them a trip or 2 to get them back in that marathon mindset early...
