Re: 2nd year hunting, dog not as good as 1st year?

Is he from strong hunting lines? V's are sometimes very slow to mature. Also, many do not handle pressure well at all. Are you "whoaing" him at all near birds? That can shut some dogs down totally. V's can be difficult to work with unless they have a super hard bird drive (and many do not). Taking i...

A crate is your best friend when raising a pup. She'll eventually use it as a den and if she ever has to be crated (vet's office, emergencies, kennels, etc.) then she'll be comfortable with one. If she seems to be peeing a lot more than would be normal, please check her for a UTI - a female dogs' pl...

at 4 months old, my Pointer pup ate 6 cups of puppy per day. Nothing wrong with him or the food, he just needed that much. At a year and a half, he's around 5 cups per day (in two feedings of course). Your pup might just take a bit more.

No point in going to the vet after 48 hours anyway, they can't stitch it up at that point. Just keep an eye on it for infection - and if you're super concerned, just keep a running temp on your dog and if her temp goes up, then off you go to the vet. I usually keep a selection of antibiotics at home...

Leaving a pup with his littermates has nothing to do with weaning at all. It has very little to do with nutrition. It's all about proper dog to dog socialization. I wouldn't shoot wild flushes, only birds that a dog has pointed and handled correctly. It's not about shooting and killing birds this first year (really, ever) so you'll have to be really controlled if you want a dog that is steady. If you don't care that he bumps birds or chases then you can shoot...
