Oil can gum up in very cold weather. If you clean the action with oil, blow it out with computer air (the little bottles of compressed air).

Oh, yeah, I have had those! But of course back in Texas we used a half jalapeno slice. To me there is nothing better than mesquite grilled quail with bacon and jalapeno. I cooked the filling tonight for the pie - pheasant breast, celery, onion, potato, carrots, a little corn, in a thick broth. (I wo...

Starting to understand "the nose" of a bird dog

This may be a naive post, but many of you know I am training my first bird dog. I took my dog and my sons on a preserve hunt this morning. We started into the field and Ginger was going down a central, mowed path into the start of a field of some cover. She was going straight down the path and got a...

For your first and only gun a 12 gauge is a good choice because you can hunt anything with wings with it and adjust your load accordingly. You have the size for bigger birds like Ducks and Geese and even turkeys, but you can load down for small animals like dove and quail. I recommend a 28" barrel ...

You'll be fine with a 20. You'll only be giving up something duck hunting, turkey hunting, wild-flushing pheasants, etc. Big birds, long range. This is why I suggest the 12. I am thinking, suppose a new shotgunner shoots a few rounds of trap, and decides to buy his first shotgun, and can really onl...

Frankly, if this is your only shotgun I would get a 12. A twelve is much more versatile - better suited for clays, waterfowl, home defense etc. For strictly upland, a 20 is probably fine. Anyway, you can do anything with a 20 that you can do with a 12, just in some cases be slightly handicapped. For...

How did you know what size chaps to get? I wear size 36 waist and 36 length. Waist size doesn't really matter - there is regular and long. With a 36" inseam you will want the long. They do make a husky size as well, which will be roomier in the thighs, but at 36x36 that probably doesn't apply to you.
