It sounds like the water isn't the problem. It sounds like he needs to be conditioned to retrieving from the blind. That means training with the blind on land (if possible) and at the water. It's a process.

I think as they gain experience, dogs will listen for you. But I wear a shooting shirt with orange patches and my strap vest. But I really don't think orange helps the dog see you.

It's hard for me to tell without seeing (and I very well could be wrong), but it sounds like your timing is off too, or it has the potential to be off, which makes the process that much more difficult. FF can be, and is, done by amateur trainers. I've done it with fantastic results. I'm no pro at it...

Springers make great waterfowl dogs with two caveats... 1. They have properly conditioned to the conditions in which they will be hunting. That includes getting in and out of a boat, ignoring decoys, simply retrieving in water, having retrieved an actual duck, sitting steady and quietly in the blind...

I guess it depends on what you want and how far you will drive, but Morgan Haglin from Pine Shadows. He's one of the best.

Another option is contacting a training group, such as Minnesota Hunting Spaniel Association or Rice Creek Hunting Dog Club.
