Re: Why are Brits and French Brits considered the same breed
I searched the net and found that they ARE two different breeds, except in America. Well puppyduks, you better do your search again, because they are the same breed in every country in the world. If I sold a pup to someone in any country in the world they would be registered in that country as an E...

There we go again. Arguing for the sake of arguing. Picking on minutia to be disgruntled about. Re-interpreting to somehow make it seem right. Did anyone ever intimate that 40 min. to catch is a more positive sign than 10?? It is not a positive, it is simply not a negative. If it were my dog it woul...

Ok, here's the deal. If a bunch of Spinone breeders/owners got together for a weekend with a couple of dozen trained dogs for a weekend of friendly competition are they going to pick the slowest dog as the winner? All Age is relative, and within every breed there are those dogs who perform above the...

phermes1, Typically when it comes to FT puppy/derby, many that I know go by the rule that if you can catch them, you might NOT want to keep them. That's the advice I was given by a veteran trialer several years ago. Turned out to be good advice. Different strokes I guess. Sounds good to me. ...

To me, my dogs are a give and get type affair. I give them all I can, and they return tenfold to me. On the other hand, I've often wondered,, If I treated them like livestock, (as some do) and strictly taught them to obey... Would I be teaching resentment as well? Now there is a post I don't unders...

Hey, if things such as you describe are anything more than once in a blue moon incidences, the quality of competition would be pretty poor. The competition can only be as good as the folks judging. As to the incident you describe with the dead bird - are you saying that there were two judges in coll...

I'm really enjoying this thread. Just proves that, like all dogs are not created equal, all judges are also not created equal. What do you guys think about marking? Lets say you have 2 otherwise identical performances, one dog marks his birds, the other stands like a statue, maintaining his intensi...

no one ever won a broke dog stake with no finds over a decent performance of a dog with a find. Been there done that also! Saw a dog who found a DEAD bird win Open Gun Dog back in Feb. It was the ONLY bird the dog found. Dog also broke at the shot on the callback. Must be some pretty poor competiti...

You see Pam, they are not "all about run", but they are also not bird finding competitions at all costs. You can't win if you can't find a bird - and don't bring up the technicality of the rule in AF because no one ever won a broke dog stake with no finds over a decent performance of a dog with a fi...

phermes1, I know this is a technicality, but it is rather germane to the understanding of judgement practice. It is not a case of the dog being penalized for too many finds, but rather that having too many finds prevented your dog from properly showing other facets of a well rounded performance, nam...

Ah, the good old "too many finds" argument. I have been on the losing side of the "too many finds" judgement a few times, AND NEVER ONCE DID I FEEL THE LEAST BIT SLIGHTED BY THE PLACEMENTS GIVEN! It is a fact that there are a great many things that go into a perfect performance and the dog that wins...

Well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that not all feeds have the same number of cups in a kilogram either. Digestibility is important. You cannot tell digestibility from kcal/cup alone. If the manufacturers would publish kcal/kg they would be giving useful information but their mar...

You cannot make a direct comparison to the listed percentages and the kcal/cup then draw a conclusion on digestibility. The percentages are weight based and the kcal are volumetric based. kcal/cup has more to do with the density of the kibble than anything else. We buy by the lb and feed by the cup ...

If you start playing tug o war with birds then it could be a problem in the field. While I have not played tug with all my dogs, I have with a few and they certainly never had an issue with giving me a bird. Any normal Britt puppy at 3 months old will look thin and lanky. They are gaining height and are all legs. Rather than giving her more time to eat, give her less. She won't starve herself. She may be teething and having trouble chewing the food. This is a short term problem, and again, she won't sta...

I am looking for a calm, obedient, easy to train, dog. I do not want a hyper dog. An angel in the house and demon in the field type dog. I researched the dog foods by feeding it to my dogs, not reading the advertising on the bag. Pro Plan is a quality food that keeps dogs going in tough conditions. Few foods can do that. The only way you can tell is if the folks raising the birds used blinders. I would be hard pressed to think that the physical size of your lab will be any factor whatsoever. A little sensitive are we? 45 lbs is a little small for hard core retrieving. If that is not the goal then there are no worries as to the size of the dog. I picked up on 45 lbs because I have seen Lab...
