If I were taking this dog, he'd learn recall before he got to run again, period. Any new dog I bring in gets basic OB anyway, so it would just be part of the adjustment to a new home.
Think of it as taking in a 20 year old kid. "These are the house rules, buddy."

Re: gun dog with a cat problem
I agree with the kennel probably being the best option. I've read, however, about a fur-sharp DD being broken against barn cats. The owner had a wire cage that he'd place the cat in - then it was basically aversion training, same way you'd do snake-braking. I'm sure I'm oversimplifying the process -...

Always rule out the physical first. Urinary tract infection causes house training problems. Pretty common in female pups. If she's peeing occasionally after just being outside, she's obviously not emptying completely while outside. If you know she must not be empty, you can't let her in until she em...

I don't personally know of any individual dogs, but if a person had the time, inclination, and right dog, it could be done. If it's too cold, you can stake him out in the house just as easily. Put an eye-bolt into the baseboard in a corner, or loop the leash under the leg of a heavy (metal) table. Just be sure there is nothing that can be chewed nearby. Use a chain or a steel cable with snaps on both ends. Works great - ...

Chukar12, that's a very thoughtful and accurate response. Keeping bird dogs in the house does presume appropriate pack leadership. In fact, it may be accurate to say that a dog that is overly indulged/spoiled in the house may actually be worse off than one put on ignore in an outdoor kennel.

That was a great post by shags.
I don't know why vets push neutering so much (other than, I suppose, the overpopulation of dogs at the dog pound) but they do.
I've read that 14 months is the absolute youngest age a dog should be neutered without creating lifelong consequences.
