LVRGSP, I love Cecil dogs so much I have 2 Ruger pups laying around in the kennel right now. Neither one of them will run under 100 yards and they are 8 months old. I wouldn't trade either pup because I like a little go in them but Will said he wanted a 40-60 yard dog that will quarter. If this is w...

Will, If you want a dog to quarter 40-60 yards to the front and work back to the gun then you are looking at the wrong blood lines. The bloodlines you mentioned are bigger running dogs and depending on the breeding could be huge running dogs. Most gsp people are tickled to death with the bloodlines ...

20 weeks old is a time to expose the pup to as many different things as possible and hunting wild birds is the best exposure possible. Wild birds will teach a pup to point stauchly better than any checkcord or commands. You will know when your pup is ready for pressure training he will let you know ...

I would suggest the checkcord and instead of pulling straight back on the dog from behind to stop him, try and get to one side or the other and make a looping circle to stop him this keeps the pressure off of him and he also learns he can't catch the birds. How old is the pup? If he's knocking and c...

Emptypair, I can show you Britts that will run to the moon and back, then I have also seen pointers that you have to kick to get out from under your feet. So to me it has more to do with bloodlines. I think on average you are right on that more britts will stay closer than any other but there some h...

Tell us more about yourself and what you want to do with the dog and where do you live and what are you going to hunt? Do you expect the dog to be a family dog, live in the house, or is it a full time kennel dog. Once you figure out what kind of dog you want then you can break down bloodlines to fit...

Listen to Snips she knows whats she's doing. I also like the idea of a letting a pup flush the bird for the same reason. When a pup figures out he can't catch the bird is when you have an honest bird dog. When people never let the pup figure this out then the dog will sometimes be a creeper or even ...

Casper, You have the Smith method down pat. Delmar and his boys have broke a lot of dogs so there's no way I can say anything bad about their method but I will so there is a easier way. Check out the West/Gibbons method if you want a method that makes sense and is easy to train. With the West Method...

I don't know if everyone will agree but If I were you I WOULD NOT teach your pup to sit until you have him broke on his birds. By teaching a dog to sit you end up with a dog that sits out of confusion during training. Most all pro trainers will tell you the same thing don't teach sit to a pointing d...

Jason, the way you need to release the birds is buy tossing the bird and letting it fly where ever it wants too. By doing this you are getting rid of most of your scent so when the pup works the bird it's all bird and none of yours. Higgins knows what he's talking about and the west method is by far...

I'm wanting to build a kennel at my home and was wondering how everyone built theirs. My plans so far are to build 4 or 5 runs with each run being 5 x 25 and I still debating on concrete or rock. What are the pro's and con's of the rock and concrete?
Thanks for the reply's in advance.
