From pre season reports, I heard central and deep south TX is where the quail are up in numbers. That the usual strong hold of Abilene and the panhandle areas are down this year.
What have you guys seen so far in TX?
Are any of the state wildlife areas showing and number of birds?

The Runt.
I've had a yr old runt that I bred years ago and she was a firecracker. Had bought another pup from a big time pro trainer. Assumed his was better than my breeding. If looking at the color chart. The Nov. litter can't run in the fall because they are too old. AKC does go by their age. They can run derby till they turn 2. I like running broke dogs in AF shooting dog stakes. But the actual b-day for derby that AKC uses, just makes since to me. Thanks for the color chart. It actually helps understand the wording of the rules.
Is there a actual reason for keeping these two groups completely separate. Why not have some overlap and allow both groups to run till 2?

I have a GSP with a Nov.birth date. She turns 2 this coming Nov. Found out she is too old to run in AF in their derby stakes. Yet if she was born Jan. 1st she could run till she was 2 1/2. There is a trick to toughening feet; sprinkle their feed consistently with plain Knox gelatin and it will help to build thicker, stronger pads.
Do you put it in their food, or on their feet? always looking for ideas to get dog's feet ready for the prairies later this month.

I may be wrong, as usual, but with the crumble the birds don't need grit. When I could afford it, I fed pellets to my Homers. They didn't get grit.
