Re: Have FT dogs changed?
How would they range that far with that many birds around? They couldn't run more than 300-400 yards without a find. Heck, in Kansas in the 80s you couldn't run further than that, I can't imagine in the 1800s in Georgia. Heck..I hunted private land around Aberdeen, SD 5 years ago and couldn't go 10...

Re: Have foot hunting dogs changed?
I will bet you on average that bird dogs in ND,SD,NE,KS, etc. are better than most dogs in Ohio. I grew up in Ohio. I know what I have seen. This "it takes a great dog to find birds where there are few" has been created by people who live where there are few birds so they can feel that they have the...

Re: Have foot hunting dogs changed?
Why do you suppose Pro-trainers go to ND,MT,SD.SK,etc. in the summer/fall for training? Do you suppose it is because there are lots of birds? :D Any trainer worth a darn will tell you it takes birds to make a dog. By your logic, to be a better basketball player, you should only shoot 20 baskets a da...

Re: Have foot hunting dogs changed?
I think the dogs were probably better 50 years ago, due to much higher bird populations throughout the country. An old man told me it takes 3-400 quail killed over a dog to make them a bird dog. Many people can't find them. The best dogs live where there are lots of birds. Unless the owner travels e...

Re: Have FT dogs changed?
My question was most about the range. When the trials started birds were thick. Just curious if dogs are running bigger now? I would think so, but I wasn't there.

I guess what I should have said is, when you are going to buy a dog for hunting what "games" would you have liked them to do well in? The kennel I mean, not just 1 dog.

I'm not talking about the format now. I'm talking about what FTs were like at the turn of the century. Even in the 1930s,40s,50s. Have the dogs evolved like athletes have, or are they very similar to what they had long ago?

Re: Have FT dogs changed?
No need for a locked thread. My question is, have HB trials changed since they were first started? It seems like they would have. With the abundance of game at their creation, a huge running dog wouldn't seem to be needed or advantageous. This forum is about sharing information. If you don't have an...

Have FT dogs changed?
I was just thinking that in the 1800s and up until the 1970s/80s there were quail out the wazzou. I talked to a man that was born in 1906 and lived in King City, MO and he would talk about shooting 50-60 quail himself before noon. He said he would walk a quarter section fence row and hit a different...

Guys - This is somewhat off topic, but there is a common misconception and it has surfaced here once again. Right on. There seems to be this idea that a dog that runs at 1500 yards is the pinnacle. Yes it does seem that way if that's what you want, and maybe not if it isn't what you want I guess what gets to me is that 99% of hunters don't require such a dog, yet it seems that a dog that runs really big ...

I might want to explain this.... if your dog doesn't range it won't cover as much ground. If the dog is trained to handle birds it won't bust them. This allows you to hunt more efficiently. If you go to a hunt test check out the dogs that don't range more then 50-75 yds. Those dogs probably won't f...
