Re: Do you 'respect' your dogs?
No, just a question. This is a gundog forum, right? Deer dogging is a tradition in my area(mostly walkers and beagles). These hounds are cared for well and a lot of time is taken to train a good pack. That being said, dogs that won't hunt, bark, or dogs that run hogs or other such trash are usually...

Some people keep them as pets or hunt them anyway, some rehome them. Not a lot of shooting in my area, not anymore anyways. But I hear lots of stories of things that go on down south. More on the hounds here than the bird dogs but some won't feed a bird dog either if it don't live up to expectation...

I have a very high respect of all animals I hunt. In fact there are times, there is a little sadness when I take big game animal. For the animal and the hunt is over. Re: Do you respect the animals you hunt?
Absolutely, one should respect the animals they hunt or the fish they catch. Shouldn't matter if it's a mourning dove or a turkey, sage rat or 6 pt trophy bull, smallmouth bass or King Salmon. Like others have mentioned in reply here I once hunted with a group that I was invited to join for a deer ...

Re: Do you respect the animals you hunt?
Best way to train a deer dog is to break down a doe(shoot the back legs out) and let the puppies catch it.
We are quick to cut it's throat after they catch.

When I went to pick up my pup, there was another guy there picking up his dog with his family. The dog was going to be purely a house dog since there were no hunters in the family. :o Why put that amount of money down on a hunting dog then? IMO, a dog with a good pedigree that will never be hunted ...

The price of a puppy is just a drop in the bucket COMPARED to what you will spend on the dog over it's 12+ years of life. Food, vet bills, dog training equipment, road trips to hunt, etc. will end up amounting to a lot of money---the pup is the cheapest part of the deal. You need patience to train ...

Hogs are bad news, I don't run hog dogs cause I don't like stitching up and burying dogs.
I do trap and shoot very hog I can and will gut shoot the lead hog just to keep them out of a food plot.
Glad your brit came out ok.
