Belle finishes her AKC championship

Tejas Bandit's Southern Belle finished her AKC championship today with a win in the Open Limited Gun Dog at the GSP of Colorado trial. Did it the hard way on the call back, first pointing a bird that was not the planted bird. Then having three missed shots once the planted bird was pointed and flush...

It depends....the 28 ga. shot string is superior to the 20 ga. I've shot straights at skeet and limited out on dove with a 28. I've never found range to be a problem, but I'm judicious as to the range I shoot at regardless of the game.

Congrats, that's a great career for many trial dogs. Hopefully yours and mine can get it done in the big boy and girl league. We'll have to turn them loose out at Cheyenne some time. In fact, Belle will be there later this month, but I don't think I will be able to make this one.

A few of you guys who have your dogs campaigned by Dennis Brath know the drill. If your dog places, you receive a telephone call. I don't believe their "broke" until they have gone through the process. The first GSP who had me was a natural retriever who never failed to produce a downed bird for the entire 7 and 1/2 years he lived. From my reading of the original post I gathered you were running your dog on either wild or pre-released birds....

I agree that your trainer has a workable plan for you. If, on the other hand, you will be hunting predominantly blues the choice should be overwhelmingly gsp's. I've been hunting West Texas with dogs since 1983. I ran mostly pointers up until 1987 and gradually shifted over completely to GSP's by the early 90's. A big influence in your selection should be the type of quail you will be hunting. If they are predominately bobs then it's basically a toss-up bet...
