Re: Winter Roosters

3 of us hunted behind my 3 weims a day after the last blizzard. Where these pics are taken is 240 acres of private ground. There is probably 60 acres that had beans. Worst part is the slough here is tile/spring fed and ice wont support walking on it. We watched 40 to 50 birds go into the willows and...

Re: Winter Roosters

Guess I am fortunate in that I have never had a dog with tender feet. My weims get some raw spots at the front of their ankles and that is it. i road the dogs on gravel year round so I suppose that helps. Actually almost never cut toenails either. My favorite hunts are lighter cover,or foodplots, pu...

Re: Winter Roosters

So my 3 weim pups and I have been toughing it out here in east central S.Dak. Dogs turn 1 on the 27th of Dec. and we are once again getting snow. Has been crazy hard to hunt late season without some snow to push the birds together and improve scenting conditions. Gentle snowfall as I type this. Tmrw...

Re: how is that deadbirds sometimes seem invisible

FF I hunt a lot of public land which requires non toxic. I shoot 2's in steel. 4's and 5's in heavyshot/bismuth. I never get down on my dogs about any retrieve problems.(well having 3 pups working over 1 bird, and not wanting to give it up, I may get a little excited!) I just am amazed by this invis...

What about the dogs hearing? I am not a beeper fan.

Re: how is that deadbirds sometimes seem invisible

I believe if I waited awhile and then brought the dog back it would find the bird after a scent fog occurs.
Polmaise, you seem to not believe this could happen with a good dog? You have never seen it?
I am not familiar with hunting in Scotland, do you hunt wild birds?

Re: recall to whistle versus e-collar tone recall

I just recently purchased a replacement e-collar. It came with vibrate and tone features. I typically train my dogs to recall on voice and on whistle but only use the whistle command VERY sparingly, and enforce it fairly vigorously, because when I do hit the whistle, I want the dog to respond immed...

Re: how is that deadbirds sometimes seem invisible

In plain sight really wasnt about the dogs abillity or lack of abillity to "see" the dead bird. It was merely proof that I could witness this conundrum. I have read of studies which document that dogs vision is better then it may seem, their brain processes images differantly then ours. Movement, as...

how is that deadbirds sometimes seem invisible

hunting pheasants with bird dogs for close to 40 years and it amazes me when dogs cant find a dead bird? I mean a deadbird laying in plainsight. I had a Weim who was a very, very good retriever, never lost 1 bird in 2 years, with a dead bird laying in a barren grazed pasture and she searched all aroun...

Re: Tips for Hunt Tests

Train in differant water like you do differant fields Rivers, ponds, sloughs and lakes..
Soft bottoms, gravel bottoms, vegatation of diff types, steep and gradual for both entrances/water depths.

In the field stop and water your dog as a calming moment. This also gives the judges a little break.

Re: VIDEO: Higgins Gundogs, Beginning Bracework

Thanks for sharing. I appreciate your videos and your taking the time to make and post them. I started the mbp thread and have 2 questions for you- 1 What does it take to get the dog to stand still on the check cord as you approach the mbp and gunner and remain still when you bring the bird back? 2 ...

Re: magic brush pile

So my first post and I cant believe a moderator has to approve the post and then a moderator posts the rude comments?
Another member posts his version of a knock knock joke?

Does it get any better?

magic brush pile

I hope this hasnt been overly discussed already.
Seems simple enough,anyone use it?
I agree with retrieve means chaseing,so the steadiness factor is desireable.
Can one not gain the same thing by by steadying the dog at a released and shot bird which is returned to the dog?
