Each gauge allows you to throw out more payload...so you either can have a denser pattern or a larger pattern of the same density if you really want to spend that much time and $$$ fine tuning your gun. My 11 year old just blew me away this year. She had some days where she was "carrying the mail" like she did years ago...just not as long. I was happy to get a good hour out of her in the morning and then again end of day. Did give her some Rimadyl but then I was on Advil :lol:

Picked up a little 3 barreled gun years ago when I lived in Germany. 20 gauge double barrel on top of an old American cartridge, the 22 Savage Hi Power (basically a 223). For grouse hunting I like just a small brass bell that I keep on a collar and slip over the dog's head as we leave the truck. I can "read" the sound of the bell on individual dogs and know a lot about what they are doing, often including if they stopped hard on point vs stopped just to relieve them...

Over the years hunting in ND, NY, Canada, etc...I have run into trucks from all over North America with dogs that probably are from Brucellosis areas. I have never been able to get my dogs from investigating the secretions of other dogs.

The real question here is what style of hunting are you comfortable with? Sounds like you are more comfortable with a dog under the gun and not a super hard charger. If that is the case, get the flusher. The pointing dogs are probably bred to run bigger than you are accustomed to...for the most part...

I don't think FF is just about retrieving. I expect a dog will show a natural propensity to retrieve and the natural cooperation to pick up and come back to me. FF does a whole lot more besides iron out the wrinkles in delivery, etc.

Before you "pop" the dog, can I ask if you have had this dog since it was a pup?? If not, I recommend you find the dog a good working home and start over. I don't think its advisable to keep dogs with unknown baggage, especially with young children. Just wondering...but what other possession issues ...

Its not the breed as much as it is the breeder. Find someone who has been at it a while. Make sure the dogs have the "switch"...that they can turn it off and be calm once they're beyond 2yrs or so. Find the right breeder...then do your part.

I have used only Dogtra collars for the past 6-8 years and have been very happy. They have held up well and the service (lost antennae and broken toggle switch) has been fast and reliable. I have the simpler models with just continuous, momentary and vibration. I find they have all the power I need ...

IMO...the 243 settles the discussion...58 gr Vmax @3800 or 85 gr @3200 ... my favorite round for Yotes and it has plenty of energy at 400 yds.

Yes, to reduce growth rate. Proper feeding regimen with the appropriate amount of feed will control your growth rate in large breed dogs. Its my understanding that OCD and ED (not referring to the problem that many suffer from here :lol: ) are contributed to by nutrition and/or a growth disturbance...
