Re: Major issues with yesterday's hunt. English setter

Mountaineer's post is right on. No gunfire, just go out and play. Start alone in the field but spend time around other people and dogs (controlled dogs!!!) when NOT hunting. Pup needs to get used to groups and other dogs, just not everything all at once. Back up and keep things slow and fun. If you ...

Which on of the older books reccomeds introducing puppies to gunfire at a shooting range or similar wording? One of them does I think. The op can correct me, but I think the problem is not the dog rushing birds, but MISSING them if not seeing them? As in never finding a bird by smell, or rarely. Is this the case maybe?

Anybody ever redocked a tail?

Anyone ever redocked or known of someone who redocked a over long docked tail? I am talking as an adult or older pup with full sedation at the vet. I have two that are growing out much longer than I like. Just curious of options or experience on this.

As cj states, all my dogs want the bird in their mouth. The stopping to honor has come pretty natural but the holding through the retrieve for another dog is harder for them. Just want to mention delaying a reward is not denying reward. The dog can learn the difference, but it is training and repetition that give them CONFIDENCE that the reward has not been denied but is just delayed and hopefully if you are training well, it is also dependent on their behavior.

agree with Ezzy one this one. We all know there are always lots of exceptions to everything, but as a general rule you need to let your pointing dog develop independence to go find. Yes calcium levels need to be appropriate as I said. As in not too high, and not exceeding the proper ratio with phosphorous. Meaning buy a food that guarantees the analysis of these important minerals, don't just assume they are correct.
