Re: Wild Birds vs Pen-Raised Birds and Pigeons
There are plenty of wild birds in Utah to break a dog, I moved 17 coveys in 2.5 days of hunting two weeks ago. Just takes some boot leather and a little hiking! I personally dont like using pigeons, especially when we have wild birds.

I agree we have different venues, but the same dog that I trial is the same dog I throw in the truck to hunt wild birds. Here is a dog, standing steady to wing and shot on a WILD covey of chukars, the gunner did not do a great job at hitting the bird... This is how I want my dogs to handle birds bei...

Nothing wrong with your method, I just dont want my dog acting like that. I want him standing tall and confident. Tail is not that much as of an issue, but lowering/crouching as I walk back is not what I want. I trial of course so I want as much style and confidence as possible.

Re: VIDEO, Steady to Wing, Shot, Fall
Its impressive for a young dog to stand at that age, I know you said no pressure was put on him during that process. But his body language IMO says otherwise. He looks brow beaten to me, and lets down as you approach him to flush the bird and as you are walking back with the dead bird. My dog respec...

Re: Sickle Tail
Ted I agree that a dog should have some style, obviously a tail between the legs no intensity etc is not something I want in a hound. But a lot of posters seem to insinuate that you will never be competitive, or it will be harder to be competitive with a dog that does not have a 12 oclock tail. Whic...

I have yet to hear tails come up in any conversation at a trial I have attended as far being the difference in someone winning or not winning. Sharon I cringe more when I see people telling a new person to grab a bunch of pigeons and start popping launchers. If he is in an area with wild birds the advice given was good IMO. A dog that wants to be honest on its own is significantly better than a dog that was "taught" to be honest.

ust one JH pass (you need 3 more for a JH title). And even then, a JH title isn't something to be hangin' your hat on from a breeding worthiness perspective. Health certs are going to be a must (unless it's the owner of a puppy mill who is bringing their female to your male). Hips, elbows, eyes.......

I never liked the idea of tracking collar's in a trial in the first place. Hence the tracker collar allows the handler to locate h...

Handlers do make a difference, I always read online of people intimidated to show up to big trials.
I figured, heck they are just dogs, I have a dog, might as well enter him!
We have had some good success the first year, hope to have more. I really enjoy them, great people and good times.

There is a lot more to winning trials than just being broke. Especially in wild bird trials!

He knows your looking for pigeons, thats why he is sneaking around the bushes. Take him up in the mtn and get him on some wild grouse, if thats what your gonna hunt. Dont waste time with pigeons.
