Hi from So. California!

Post by VersatileDD » Wed Oct 09, 2013 2:59 pm

Hey all! New to hunting and hunting dogs, I hope to learn much from this forum and hope to have a fine hunting dog in the future. I did a lot of research to decide which breed to add to the family and finally decided on a duestch drathaar. I already put a deposit on a puppy and joined this forum to get more info from experienced hunters. If anyone has any helpful tips please feel free and post away. I also have a question, would having a pigeon coupe make things a bit more easy in training? Or is having birds not necessary?

Bird dogs need birds, pigeon loft and homers are a good way to provide them.

Welcome to the versatile dog world. Check out Socal NAVHDA. Great group of people and knowledgeable people. You will get a lot of pointers there (no pun intended).

That is a good price, are they of pairing age? I also have a few other questions would quail be easier to keep and raise compared to pigeons? I know I would lose a lot of quail while training compared to pigeons but what are the pros and cons of both?

You can find pigeons on craigslist, quail are to easy for a young dog to run down and catch. I would contact the NAVHDA chapter near you and go to their training days. Good folks that are happy to help.
