Hello from N. ILL
Hello all,
New to the forum, I've owned Labradors for 17 years. I breed, trained and competed in AKC retriever trials for a 8 years prior to having kids. Once kids came into my life the wife didn't like the idea of me being gone every night and on the weekends training and competing. I as well wouldn't miss seeing the kids grow up, it only happens once. Now with the kids getting older, I've been kicking around the idea of getting a pointer/setter.
I know zero about pointer/setter pedigrees. My primary concern is that the dog would be good with my family and not a barker. I'd like to find a group/club that meets on the weekends to train in the far western burbs.
I'd like to get out and see the different breeds work, see what the difference in looks is between the various pedigrees within the breeds.
It's tough changing breeds, learning everything over again.
Thanks. CBB

I have some Brits you can come look at. You can't be too far from Desplaines Wildlife Area and they are running trials and tests there every weekend. I'll be glad to take you out so you can watch the dogs work. Just let me know if you would care to go.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Thanks all,
Ezzy, I know Des Plaines very well, spent many days down there when the retriever clubs had their trials down there. Many long days throwing birds, gunning, marshaling, judging trials. There were a few fall weekends when Red setter clubs would be running their trials the same weekend, got to see some beautiful dogs works. Watched a few NSTRA events as well.
If your going to be out training, I'd like to see your Brits work some weekend, I use to pheasant hunt out your way at Green River. Use to fish the Rock river as well, caught some walleye south of the dam. Being in Dixon have you ever been to On Point hunt club?
I'll have to contact someone from the NAVHDA and see when their next training weekend is.

I dont think On Point exist anymore. I belong to a club over nearer Morrison. Give me a hollar if you can get away sometime.

Yep,
Jack and Diane are running it again.
Didn't know that is what Jamie is calling that place. For a matter of fact didn't know they actually had a club. Last I knew he just had a field that they used for a dog training area and heard a few weeks ago he was losing that. I really don't know whats going on out there.
A couple of years ago they raised a bunch of birds and then couldn't get enough acres to have a club. Kind of did things backwards and got caught with lots of birds and no place to hunt and that is when they started the training area and you could buy the birds and shoot them on it.
I just never checked it out. Always had trouble talking to Jamie.
