Welcome Rodney! Does Ohio allow dear tracking with dogs? Weims are awesome trackers, and mine stay busy all deer season, but especially bow season. They brought in 18 deer and three wild hogs this year.

They must have changed this. I checked the rules and it can be done but I thought for years you could not do it. Only thing that sucks is it has to be on a leash. :(

I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome. I have considered training Gus to track deer. I have been told that is not a good thing to train a bird dog to track deer. I hope to end up with a decent bird dog and would like to have him retreve some early season geese. I'm not looking for a champion dog just one we can enjoy getting out in the field with. I'll try to get out on some of the training days if the Toledo Boys will alow Us. Again thanks for the replies...

PS. LittleKing, I'm on the your 2 boards, the hunting one and the fishing one....

Phooey. Mine all track large game. And all but one are or have been on the WCA Top Ten list for Derby and/or Gun Dog. All are personal hunting dogs and plantation guide dogs. Two are also licensed SAR dogs (man tracking). Tracking with Weimaraners is almost like cheating--they are that good :D AND, they know the difference between hunting and tracking. They won't bother with deer while we are hunting birds.

Tracking is the one area where Weims are better than any other gun dog breed.
