My name is Barbara. I live in upstate NY. I have three Shorthairs and a Pointer. I train and hunt them. Been training for about 12 years. Do NAVHDA mostly but AKC as well. My favorite bird to hunt is Woodcock which I adore.
I try to train or run the dogs every day when I am not working as a Psychotherapist and flute teacher. Have had Shorthairs for 13 years. Just got my first Pointer, an Elhew, and now I am hooked on longtails, though I will never give up my shorthairs.
I started huntin whenI saw my first dog work. Been hooked ever since.

Look forward to being on this site. Know some of you already! :D

Good afternoon Gun Dog Forum (GDF) members, I am relatively new to the site as I registered some time ago, but haven't been very active so I thought I'd introduce myself. I am DaveD. from NY, 30 years old, enjoy being outdoors, hunting and fishing, working out (CrossFit), playing sports, and especially enjoy time with family and friends. I recently purchased and Elhew (English) Pointer pup whom I've named, Gus (Elhew Bigfoot is his registered name), from Elhew Kennels/Chokebore Kennels a few months ago. It's been great thus far and Gus is actually headed back to Brian T. Hays & Co. for the start of his initial 3-month training this weekend. I'm super excited to have Gus get started on his training and thrilled that I'll be getting him back in time for the start of the season in October. Gus is my first official hunting dog, so this year should be quite an experience for me. I look forward to many great memories and many fruitful hunts. I can't wait. I hope to be more active and look forward to getting to meet some of you through chats, posts, and member interaction.

Stay well and enjoy the summer.

DaveD.

Hello Everyone. I have been browsing around here for awhile but just registered.

A little about me, well I am a 33 year old father of 2 girls, who are very well taken care of by my wonderful wife. In less than a month we will be getting a new Brittany puppy. While I plan to do some hunting with him, he will be more of a family pet than anything. We are excited to make him part of our family .

5 years ago, my 2 year old lab died unexpectedly. I had put a lot of time into training him, even sending him to a professional trainer for several months. He was a great companion and an excellent upland bird dog, after his death the thought of getting another gun dog did not appeal to me at all. After 5 years I think it is time to get back in the game.

Looking forward to puppy breath and getting out and working with the new pup, also looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Josh

27 year old male from texas. I work as a security contractor. I have been deer hunting my whole life and just got into duck hunting this year with a friend who has been duck hunting his whole life. Im teaching him to deer hunt and he is working with me on duck hunting. When i decided to get into this i decided i wanted my own dog also. I ended up getting a chocolate lab out of corsicana texas. I dont know what other information you would like right of the bat but i am honestly on here looking for help in training my lab.

I'm Eric, 23 years old, from Cloquet Minnesota and work as a plumber/pipefitter's apprentice. I was married about a year and a half ago, and have a son who's almost 7 months. I have a male GSP, Oskar, who's a year and a half old. He was recently just diagnosed with addison's disease, which is certainly a downer, but with medication he can live a normal life. I got him some formal bird training last fall, but he still refuses to point the majority of the time. He has plenty of drive though, and is great around my son. I grew up hunting grouse, but I am planning my first pheasant trip for this fall/winter. I've had dogs my whole life, though never a gun-dog, just mutts. Anyways, if anyone has any tips on good public land for pheasant hunting within a day's drive of the Duluth MN area, I wold greatly appreciate any advice. I'll leave any other questions I have for another post. Thanks,

Eric

Hi all! New to the gun dog forum and so I thought I should introduce myself!

My husband and I just got our first American Brittany (3 days ago to be precise). My husband and I are both graduate students and work as research assistants living in Kentucky though we are originally from Wisconsin. My husband is a hunter and loves shooting trap, me not so much. I'm an animal lover and outdoorswoman! I love all things outdoor- fishing, hiking, camping, swimming- if it's outside I'll be there. I joined the forum when I decided to get a gun dog, I'm staying because I need the help! Our little girl is a smartie and this is our first time training a dog completely by ourselves.

I look forward to reading all our your sage advice!

Training a dog and watching them grow and learn is what keeps me going.

Hello! My name is Steve Selvig. I'm 64, retired and hunt birds every chance I get. Recently remarried, I reside in Woodland Park, CO. A Springer owns me, Drake is a 3 yr. old male that shows some real promise to be a great upland dog. He's a tad reluctant on geese (so far) but loves to retrieve ducks and is an absolute retrieving machine on upland birds. I've been around Springers all my life, my father raised 'em and I've had at least one all my life.

I start my season Sept. 1st on blue grouse, hit the ptarmigan hard all month long and try to hunt prairie grouse in Nebraska a couple three times every fall. Waterfowl take over my time by Nov. 1st and I hunt a local preserve--RMR--throughout the late winter. I usually have one big trip every year, this year we're hunting sea ducks in Rhode Island. . I've got a "bucket list" of hunts that I want to do before Drake wears me out and will travel as far as necessary. If anyone has a line on Ruffed Grouse in Wisconsin or the UP I'd appreciate some tips.

Steve

My name is Judy and I was hunting in my teens. I started out on squirl and moved up to coon hunting with dogs and then it just exploded from there. Now I love to hunt deer and turkey as well but I have to say I loved the coon hunting the best because I loved hunting with dogs. I have been showing dogs (different breeds) for 25 years in the conformation ring. I work with hunting and herding dogs mostly because I love their personality. I don't have my own hunting dog but I hunt with people that have them and still enjoy it to the fullest. I've been saying I was going to get myself one for along time now but I don't have the room.

Hey guys,

New to this site. 24 years old, marine engineer from Eastern Maine. Been an avid hunter since my grandfather used to take me with him as long as I can remember. Bought my first male GSP last September and this fall will be my first season hunting with him. Look forward to spending a lot of time in the woods and duck blind with him this fall. I'm still new to the whole training thing and have never hunted with a dog before so i'm very anxious. The dog has been professionally trained and he received his NAVHDA N/A prize 1 this past June at 11 months. Hoping to learn as much as I can from all the veterans.

I'm new to all of this. Got a DD to keep up with me in the bush, on the trail and eventually on a hunt. I am green as they come and am looking for knowledge. This forum came as a recommendation of the breeder. I'm not into testing but want to ensure that my dog can reach it's potential.

Looking forward to participating.

I hunt upland game with a springer who is two and I'm 65 yrs old. I got the time to hunt and plan to visit different states for upland game. I also, turkey, deer & waterfowl hunt. A member of a leasing group so I can hunt and not be over run with public hunters who will cut in front of you when in the field. I enjoy getting kids into a hunt or skeet/ trap shooting. Killing birds is no problem but watching a dog work is really fun. I have had my share of game to clean when I go home but that is not to say you get your limit each time out or see birds when you think they are around. It"s not the kill but the time outdoors and visiting different counties in different states. Going to SD for the fifth or sixth time this fall for pheasants. I live in central Iowa and enjoy the Fall/snow months.

Hello,

I live in northern NY (grew up in northern NH) and my wife and I have two labs, one yellow female (Lola) and a choc male (Tuukka). 90% of the time we are hunting grouse in northern NY or northern NH. I have shot rabbits, and squirrels in front of them, but grouse is always our main goal. I have taken them out for pheasants and we did kill a few, I say we because the dogs have caught a few and brought them back to me without me taking a shot. They are not fine tuned hunting dogs, but they do a real good job staying close and flushing grouse. They retrieve fairly decent too. I will miss the first half of hunting season (military deployment), but I will get to hunt Jan and Feb! Can't wait!

Male 38, West Bend, WI. Service and Parts director at a car dealership. I have a soon to be 6 year old male Black Lab. I belong to a local hunt club where I have 40 pheasents reserved every year. Also hunt wild birds as well. Currently teaching my 11 year old son to hunt under the Dnr mentorship program. Work lots of hours but hunt and fish whenever we can. Would love to start a dog training/boarding business, but afraid to take the leap. Thanks for having me aboard, really enjoying the site so far.

Hello,

I feel like I'm greener than them all!! I'm a 36 year old chiropractic physician in central california. Besides my issued weapons when I was in the military, I barely bought my first personal firearm 2 years ago (Remington 870). I shoot sporting clays and tactical shotgun.

I have NEVER hunted, and this is also my first ever dog that wasn't some little ankle biter. I have a 6 month old AKC black Lab. I've had him since he was 14 weeks old.

I love training my little buddy, and I would like him to be an enjoyable upland hunting dog and possibly waterfowl too. But yes, I am clueless. A great learner, patient, willing to work, but admittedly clueless.

I love all things hunting and fishing, and don't get enough time to do either. Just started my first English Setter..Gus. He's 7 months old from Smoke Rise/Grouse Ridge stock and he is a machine. If it don't fly, he don't care about it. All he wants to do is hunt. All I want to do is hunt. It makes for a good pairing

I live in South Eastern Washington and have a 3 year old English Springer that I adopted from a family that could no longer keep him. He a papered but fixed male, and has been great. I have two boy that are 10 and 13. Both want to hunt pheasant this year, and we are hoping Rufus can learn to hunt.

So far Ive bought bumpers, wings, scent, and ordered a book. I try to work with him 10min morning and evening. Im wondering now if I should try and find a reputable trainer that could help us get on the right track. Any advice would be appreciated

Hello,
My dogs name is Copper he is 13 weeks old( English Setter ) and both are new to training.I have two teenage sons who will be hunting with me and helping in the training. Our goal is to hunt game farm and wild birds in the northern part of WI. I am looking to gain knowledge in the area of training pointing dogs. I have the book " Speed train your oun bird dog" and finding it helpful. I am also considering hiring a trainer to help speed the learning curve and need feedback there also. I look forward to online chats and messages from anyone with constructive feedback. I feel I make more mistakes than my dog right now and hope I am not teaching poor hunting traits.

Good luck hunting
Carl

I'm 24, and manage a 5000 acre plantation in central georgia for a living. I currently have 3 dogs i personally train and 4 other field trial labs I help in training. I grew up hunting cypress/tupelo swamps in coastal SC since i was 4. I have a 4yo red lab, Dixie, who does everything with me, waterfowl hunt, stays in the bed of my truck while i work all day, shed hunts with me. I have recently begun training 2 english pointers(gunner and rebel), and growing up a swamp rat have very little experience with upland dogs. Joined the site to hopefully have a helpful place to find tips and answers to some of the questions that i know will pop up during the training process. I'm big on passing on the outdoor heritage, and forever thankful to the father and uncle who always made time to take me afield and began my hopefully long and happy life in the woods.

50 year old male. Semi-professional trainer, specialty is re-introduction of gun-fire (gunshy cure). I live in Kansas and hunt upland birds almost exclusively now. My real passion is the training. If killing birds was not a part of it, I could probably do without shooting a single bird all season. Wasn't always the case, but it is now. In fact, I started with bird dogs in an effort to kill more birds. Now, there is no more beautiful sight to me than a well-mannered dog doing what it was bred to do. I have always worked in manufacturing because I found it gave me more time to hunt and fish. Money is nice, but 8 hours a day with no work on the weekends is nicer. I joined this site after skulking for a while because the info given for so many gunshy posts is just wrong. Regurgitated conventional wisdom with no real experience or basis in fact behind it. Sooo....on to the first gunshy post!

I am 53 years old and have been an avid upland bird hunter since age 12. Grew up around English Pointers, the only dogs my dad would own. Went into the Army and did 20 years in the Infantry. The only bird hunting I did was when I was lucky enough to come back home on leave. Dad retired and slowed down and bought a Viszla, couldn't keep up with the pointers anymore. I fell in love with these dogs after hunting with dad and decided to buy one when I retired from the Army in 2003. I have bought two more since then. Unfortunately lost my old dog to cancer after 2011 season, at least he had a good last season. I have 80 acres near Burden, Kansas that I have been restoring for the last five years for quail. The hard work is finely paying off, starting to see and hear alot more birds. I have at least four more years of work to get the land where I want it. Looking forward to retiring in seven years moving to the farm and raising Viszla's.

I am a truck driver, married with 3 kids. I have 3 dogs, lab, rottweiler , French bulldog. Our lab is a new puppy, gundog bred. Just started my daughter in archery and myself. My daughter would love to train our lab to do dock diving. Pup loves the water. Although doesn't seem very interested in retrieving.

Hello All

My name is Kevin Morris, and I am from Urbandale, IA. I am forty years old and I have (2) GWP's. Shelby is a 10 year old female, and Kruizer is a 1 year old male. He is my latest project as a rescue from an owner who never deserved a dog like this. I have been working with him since getting him in May of this year. He had not seen a car ride, prairie, water, birds, etc. when I got him. Just the inside of a kennel. With some mentoring from a pro here in IA and some time spent by me he is coming along nicely. I have him swimming (a potential dock diving dog), broke to birds, broke to the 20 ga and rehearsed to his basic commands. He is doing some very basic natural retrieving as well. Now I am working on bringing him under a bit more control. His prey drive is incredible, and he has had a couple of instances now where he has gotten away from me on the checkchord to get in on the pigeon. So I am concentrating on Whoa. Also, for retrieving he is not wanting to give up the frozen birds when I use them.

Anyway, a work in process. Shelby is a great hunting dog. In her prime, I ended up getting a divorce and not taking her to the next level. She is steady to the flush, but not to shot. She is a natural retriever and is rock solid about it. Great dead bird finding ability as well. She has had a couple of bouts with Mast Cell tumors and I now content to just enjoy every minute with her I can.

I am here as a resource for answering questions that I might know a little about or hopefully getting some answers to my own questions as I am just a pup in this field. Would be nice to maybe find some people from my own area as well.

Talk to you soon.

Kevin

Hi,

I have been hunting in SW Idaho for 30+ years with GSP's. Mainly chukar and huns on public land since the pheasant decline and access difficulty to farmland here. I'm in the upper 50's now. I currently have two GSP's. A 3.5 yr. male and a 2 yr. female. Both are solid liver from local trial and hunt breeding. My kids (now 31 and 28), are now grown and gone so I have far more time (and energy), to get serious about my pointing dogs, their training, and hunt progress. I have always wanted to take a dog far and do it the right way myself. Now I have my chance with the help of experts at the local poiner club. My wife does not much appreciate the now 2 year old pigeon loft in her (?) back yard or the near daily flights and the interruption it causes. The dogs must be locked up out of sight until the last pigeon is back in the loft. She does enjoy the dogs and I think she may be starting to understand it all. Hopefully it will not be percieved as a wierd pigeon and dog obsession with no real purpose for too much longer. The season has started and I had better be bringing home some significant game soon as proof that it all had merit. So far after a few hunts and to no fault of my dogs, it still appears to be not much more than some wierd pigeon and dog obsession.

My name is John. I am 36, and have a beautiful English Springer puppy 5 mo. old. He is my first dog, and I'd like to train him to hunt grouse with me; walking all those trails by myself is getting pretty boring. He is responding well to basic commands, but now I'm ready to move into the more advanced aspects of training with him. Did alot of searching, reading, and found GDF. Looking forward to hearing/reading tips on turning Sherman into a first-rate grouser.

I'm AtTheMurph (or ATM), 49yr old man currently with 2 bird dogs (Vizsla 10yr , Braque Francais 3yr) and the desire to hunt as much as I can. I'm in central Indiana so right on the edge of quail and pheasant land but I also own land in E. central WI which is good for pheasant and waterfowl (I have a 17ac lake on one property).

I belong to a bird dog club that is the home of NSTRA however I don't and have never run trials. I't just a great place to run my dogs and get some bird action off season.

I'm 29 and live in PA with my husband and three dogs: Emma, a sharpei/terrier mix (a shelter rescue); Andy, a retriever/spaniel mix (came from an acquaintance) and Delilah, a healer/shepherd/chow/mountain dog/who knows what else mix (dumped on the road). The dogs I've had growing up were mutts that came into our lives in similar ways as the three I have now with the exception of Princess Cuddles, the basset hound my dad got me when I was 7.
I've studied dog training and animal behavior but as I'm too afraid as of yet to try to make a living off of it :| I'm currently relying on my electronics background to pay my bills.
My husband has been an avid hunter his entire life. When it came to bird hunting he mostly worked with his brother's irish setter or his uncle's retriever, but he's always enjoyed working with his uncle's brittanys. Since we both enjoy hunting we've decided to add a brittany to our pack. I then realized that I had never trained any type of pointer. I've worked with Andy as a retriever but was unsure of the techniques used in getting the proper responses of a pointer in the field... and so the search for information commenced leading me to this very helpful forum. :D

Hello, I am 62 yr old. married forever same gal. dogs all my life. I have shown dogs, bred dogs, and loved all of them. I have never owned a hunting dog. I live in west Tn. My gsp is 4 months old and knows nothing. I am wearing the same shoes lol. I live on 6 acres and have a big pen with 40 jumbo brown quail. I can hobble them and he points real good. So far gunfire at a distance is not a problem. I am stumped on whethet or not to teach sit, heel or when. when should whoa be taught? Is it ok to let him catch live quail? Please don't suggest a trainer. I can't afford stuff like that. I will never enter field trials. Just want to raise flight conditioned quail and hunt them with a friend. My pup is a bundle of energy right now. With spots and length of his legs i wonder if the "G" in GSP stands for Giraffe. Thanks for letting me rattle bout me and my dog. Larry

Hi, my name is Christian. I am 22 years old and currently serve in the U.S. Navy. I started shooting guns with my grandpa when I was about 4 (just .22 pump actions). I did most of my hunting in the high desert of California, which means a lot of quail, dove, rabbits, and coyotes. I live in Georgia now with my wife and 3 dogs (soon to be 4). I have a 15" Beagle, Bluetick Coonhound, a Wheaton Terrier, and in a month or so I will have a German Wire-Haired Pointer. Now that I am in the south I have to adjust to a different style of hunting, so I am beginning to train my two hounds to hunt. My Beagle is a quick learner and I expect he will be an skilled rabbit dog. My coonhound is also a quick learner and very eager to please and has the basics down as far as treeing is concerned, but he still has little way to go. I am looking forward to getting a German Wire-Haired Pointer this winter, but after all of the research I have done I've learned that pointing and retreiving are a little bit tougher to teach. I've been looking around for information that might help me to facilitate the training proccess and I hope to find a lot of good stuff on this forum.

Okay, I made a couple posts before really introducing myself on the site:

Brian Kelley
Chesterfield, Michigan
45 yrs old
Army - 27 yrs (recently retired)
I now work for the Army as a civilian.....

I haven't worked behind a bird dog seriously since I was a kid, about 12-17 yrs of age. My grandmother had two Weims that were unbelievable bird dogs and I hunted with them nearly every weekend growing up. I had several beagles and rabbit hunted everyday during the season as well. I spent 15 years in the Army as a Dog Handler/Trainer/Instructor (mostly with narcotic and explosive detector dogs). Training a bord dog is something however, that is a little new to me. I have studied canine behavior for quite some time and have never found a problem (at least in a detector dog) that I couldn't figure out and fix. In my experience the problem was usually due to the handler, not the dog. Of all of the hunting dogs I have ever owned though, I have never trained one of them.... They all figured it out on there own and usually trained me:)

Have a new (5 mo old) Brittany (REMI) that I am looking forward to hunting with. Last week was his first time in "The Big Woods" in Western Lower Michigan.... He is extremely fast (a little too fast for the thick woods), but fairly thurough and only 150 yds from the camper locked right up on his first Wild Grouse. It was extremely thick and the bird wild flushed before I could get into a position to get a shot off..... Unfortunately!!! Would've been a heck of a way for him to start off.

I think I am going to take him to a nearby preseve and put him on some birds in the open a little until I have a little more control and he understands a little better that once he pins the birds, I flush and shoot and viola....he gets to fetch the bird. He's extremely smart and will figure it out pretty quickly.
