A little about you...

My name is Stuart
I'll be 29 in two weeks
I've been married for 2.5 years to my high school sweethart.
No kids yet.
I live in Baltimore,MD and I've been here for almost 4 years now.
I program video games for a living for PC, XBox 360, and PS3. My wife is an architect.
I was raised in Birmingham, AL and have since lived in Atlanta, NYC, DC, and Baltimore. My wife and I just bought our first home and are already in over our heads with home improvement projects.

I'm finding that the older I get the more my southern tendencies come to the surface. I'm new to bird hunting and training gun dogs but I'm looking forward to taking my four month old GSP through the NAVHDA tests. When I'm not working with my dog I'm either fly-fishing for bass, bluegill, or trout or I'm out rock climbing. I've been an avid climber for most of my adult life and have travelled all over the world to climb. I also love travelling, backpacking, trail running, playing the banjo, eating really good food, and drinking beer.

Put a deposit down for my first GSP 2 weeks ago and will be picking him up in 2 weeks.

23 years old, single, no kids.

I go to school at Washington State University and will be graduating in May. I've learned quite a bit from this forum in the past weeks and am looking forward to my continued learning.

Here's my pup:

My name's Steve. I live in Nashville for over a decade, but grew up in rural AL.

I've been a hunter/fisherman all my life. I have loved dogs, but I have only recently looked into merging the two. My father used dogs for deer hunting. It was legal up until a few years back. He had Walkers, Blueticks, Redbones, etc. But as he got older and his hunting party got smaller, he switched to beagles. I used to love to walk the dogs through the woods and put them on a trail. Sometimes I'd be the dog as I squirrel hunted in the creek bottom and my dad, brother and great uncle would sit in some fields waiting for a deer I might spook.

I've had mutts, a black lab, a lab/samoyed mix that was absolutely beautiful, a miniature feist that was my attempt at squirrel dog training, but she proved to be gun shy, a catahoula, an akita/lab mix and an akita/ridgeback that we just had to get rid of because he could not adjust to our daughter that we adopted from China last May.

I'm a schoolteacher and director of youth ministry, and I love the outdoors and I look forward to my next dog, which might be awhile, but in the meantime, I want to learn about gun dog training.

hmmmmm..... a little about me. I didn't know this was match.com....hehehe

My name is Brian. I am 30, married, and a 5 week old daughter.
I am a pharmaceutical sales representative. I have two weimaraners. I have been around dogs all my life. I grew up hunting beagles with my family. My gradfather had setters years ago. I have owned many dogs, but the weims are my first bird dogs. I was born and raised in south Mississippi. I have lived here my entire life except for the two years I lived in Dallas, TX. I look forward learning from everyone and sharing my experiences.

I'm 27 and currently in graduate school getting a master's in middle grades education. Yes, to teach teenagers. My wife works at a local college as the assistant director of PR.

Grant got us hooked on GSP's and our first one was given to us by a friend. Coco was six when we got him and had never had a day of training in his life. I was so impressed with how smart he was and how quick to learn he was.

We are getting our first GSP pup in about 2 weeks. We can't wait. I hope to do some real training with her and hopefully enter a few trials down the road. That's about it.

My name is Chris. Im almost 29 years old (5 more days). Just moved back to the great state of AZ about 11 months ago from Reno, NV (THANK GOD!). Married 7 months ago to Shawni she is 26 years old. Im a lumber salesman here in PHX. Bought our first GSP back in November. Jake is 7 months old and currently in training at Desert Creek Kennels with Tony Marquez (awesome trainer). Bought my second GSP about 1-1/2 months ago. Chassi is almost 4 months old and is insane. She will be going to training when Jake is done with his training. I spend most of my time with the dogs and in the feild with the trainer learning every weekend. I spend the rest of my spare time with the wife or hunting. I have had a blast with my dogs. They are our kids for right now, but we plan on having kids in about 2 years. Get all of the playing out of the way.[/b]

Hi, my name is Kimberly Daft I am 23 and married. I have a 15 month old son and 7yo step-daughter and have not had a pup in years so we're greatly anticipating the homecoming of our little "Jackson" on May 6th. He is a dual quality GSP from Briarfield Kennels so we are going to do our best to train and involve him in everything from field trials to shows.

I am a stay at home mom currently although I have a lengthy work background including everything from doing animal shows and care at a wild life preserve to writing, politics, art store manager, medical assistant, etc. I am enjoying the slower pace of life caring for my family now but am really looking forward to the activity and fun our dog will add to mix. My husband helps run an autoshop here in Nashville and is looking forward to taking up bird hunting just as soon as he can find someone to teach him a thing or two...

We have a place that backs up to woods and trails leading right up to Percy Priest Lake so we're hoping he'll enjoy the water and have no doubt he'll love the wide open spaces to run. We don't have a fenced in yard so we'll be taking him out for a lot of runs and working hard at heel, sit and come from day 1.

We want to raise him right so I'm scouring everything I can find for information, I think I have worn my breeder out with questions, but she has been so helpful and supportive I couldn't have asked for kinder or more helpful person than Laurie Thompson to get our puppy started right. Right now I'm here to learn but hopefully in the future will be able to contribute back to the forum.

Thanks

Hi Kim,

Welcome again, to GDF! Lots of good people here.

Since you plan to compete in shows and field trials, I recommend that you postpone "sit" till after he/she is comfortable pointing. "Whoa" is pretty much as good around the house anyway.

Your best start would be to take your pup on short walks along the edge of mowed fields. Start with 5 minutes and work your way up. You don't want to tucker pup out, you want to live pup wanting more.

Living as close to the lake as you do, you make be tempted to push introduction to water. My best advice is to let that take care of itself. Wait till warm weather, then get pup good and hot and then walk through a shallow creek... They learn that water is *a good thing*. After you have a good handle on them, you might take them out to a pond and let them chase ducks on the pond. I wouldn't recommend doing it on nesting geese...

BTW, just checked and your pup is related to mine through DC Odyssey Saint Blitz.

Best regards, Greg J.

I am George Foulds and I am a full time guide in south Texas. My business is Lone Star Guide Service and I guide quail hunts (wild birds-bobs and blues), whitetail deer, dove, turkey, etc. In the summer, I stay busy training my dogs and guiding saltwater bays and flats fishing trips. I spent the month of April in Oklahoma training dogs with Ronnie Smith. I usually keep 20-25 English Pointers in my kennels and I also have a black lab that I hope to use for hunting dead quail. I have 8 new pointer pups born yesterday, so it will be a really busy summer. My wife, Donna helps me take care of the dogs and she is the camp cook or Gabby Hays as she says when she cooks for customers that stay with us when we hunt. The ranches I hunt have been getting plenty of rain, and it looks like we will have a great quail season.

I am Charles Sherrod and live in NW Alabama. I own a one-man consulting business specializing in environmental (as well as other) regulations associated with federally funded utility projects. I work the entire state of Alabama. I will soon be sixty years old and have had pointing dogs since I can remember. I hope to retire in little over a year or at least cut back to make more time for the dogs.

My hobby is breeding Llewellin Setters and competing with them in NSTRA trials. We no lomger have a huntable quail population in my area so NSRTA provides a vehicle for us to stay involved with our dogs without having to have a lot of money. We also have a great bunch of guys in our local regions. I started running seriously last year and learned along with my dogs and am hopeful we can do better this year since we have gained a little experience. If nothing else we have learned some things "not to do".

This seems like a very nice bunch of people here. I like the way everyone seems to show respect for other members opinions. GDF is different from other bbs in that respect.

I paid my premier membership and hope to be accepted here (even if I do favor long haired dogs with tails.

Thanks, Charles

Welcome Charles!! -

Charles, lots of bob-tail dogs here, but lots of long-tails also. Most folks here just appreciate a good bird dog, IMHO.

I've managed to post many times w/o seeing this thread.
Name: Todd Rockhold
Age: 39
Occupation: Working for the US Govt for the last 20 years. Got a degree in Business Management from Wm Penn Univ in Iowa (where I grew up).

Married to Marci and have two boys, Alex and Elijah.

My dad had shorthairs, pointers and a Brittany when I was a kid. Lucky enough to remember the days of 10 coveys per day in Southern Iowa. The old man can still out shoot me w/ his 870 Wingmaster.

Did the AKC Hunt Test thing for awhile and believe it is one of the best venues going. Sent a dog to Lenn Forbush in 1997 and then met Bryan Long of Hedge Rise Kennels the same year and have been with him off and on with the field trial game ever since. Now have one dog on the "circuit" w/ Bryan.

GSP's are a favorite and I like the HT and FT venues. However, kinda disappointed in the way FT's are going.

I collect guns and ride a Harley. Love to wild bird hunt and hope my boys will do the same.

Should of done this months ago...oooops! Anyway, that's me in short.

From: West Texas (Lubbock)

Age: 30 and 31 on Aug 29
Occupation: I currently work for The Department of Homeland Security as a Bomb Technician. I was in the Army before that as an EOD Tech (Army Bomb Squad). I also own a company called Outdoor Connection. We arrange hunting and fishing trips for clients all over the world. I am pretty lucky that I have a family that allows me to play with bombs and hunt and fish all over the world. I am a very blessed man. I have also been very lucky in the fact I have had some wonderful dogs in my life. I lost a great hunting companion a couple of years ago and pretty much swore off bird hunting. After awhile I have now got a 8 month old GSP that is in SD as I write this chasing birds in summer camp. I can not wait to get her back.

On a side note I am a Fightin Texas Aggie that lives in Red Raider Land. I do however love Lubbock and will probably never move. Did I mention I love college football.

Married to a red raider with one 10 year old daugther.

This will be my first dog that i train. Wish me luck.

My name is Jess. Female-38. Married 18 yrs. Two kids, 15yr old boy & 13 yr old girl; 5 dogs: Oliver, Westie 9 yrs; Hacket, GSP 3yrs (our first); Sophie, Llewellen Setter 2 1/2 yrs (rescued, would like to learn more about the breed); Daisy, GSP 10 mnths; Scout, GSP 8 mths.

I live in central Oklahoma (go Sooners) and have worked in the banking industry for about 20 yrs.

My life with hunting dogs started when my husband decided after 10yrs of never hearing him mention the words "hunt" asked for a high dollar shot gun for Christmas....at the time, we couldn't afford it so I began saving. After finally being able to save enough, I got him the gun he wanted. Then my wonderful husband looked at me over a pile of Christmas wrapping paper and said "now I need a bird dog!" The rest is my ongoing history.....we got Hacket, I fell in love and we just keep adding on.

We are trying to train ourselves and love all the advice available on this board and ones like it. We are currently using the Perfect Start DVDs as our training guide. We are members of the OK NAVHDA chapter but rarely get a chance to go to training days because of my husbands work schedule. I would love the opportunity to meet and train with others in my area that have the same problems with weekend scheduling.

If anyone is in the area and would like to train together feel free to contact us.

I believe we did meet. I had a great time there but with Drew's odd hours and two teenagers, it's hard to make the weekend trainings. I was hoping to find someone close to work with in the evenings so that I could get some consistancy in our training. I'd love to get together some time, that's be great.

I'm a 24 (25 next month) male, been bird hunting, mostly upland for 3 years. Diesel is a year old Pointer out of the Crow's Little Joe/Honky Tonk Atitude bloodlines. He's my first bird dog. Most of the time I hunt with a buddy with a pointer that has been hunting for about 40 years.

I'm a carpenter (custom trim) and am also into diesel trucks. But bird dogs occupy most of my time/money/thoughts. My wife rarely minds my hobbies, but doesn't get them either.

Hello there!

I'm a West Coast transplant to PA, am married with a 16 year old daughter. I have been in competition dogs since 1985, starting my career with Pembroke Welsh Corgis in both the showring and herding trials and ended up here with a kennel full of gun dogs. Hubbie is a pro trainer and carpenter on the side ( finish carpentry). I'm a groomer.

Together we share life with 7 Brittanys, 1 Irish Red and White Setter, one Cardigan Welsh Corgi and a trash dog of mixed heritage, call name "Trash" (He is mostly Border Collie).

Kiki is my latest project. She was born last Feb, a product of a mating between my DC ( DC Mokan Wild Mtn I'm Justa Gigolo) x a NFC/AFC Lea's Running Jayhawk daughter ( Midas Zippin Red Hot Dot). She by far the UGLIEST Brittany I have ever seen but she has a heart the size of Texas, a heck of a nose for birds, a run that carries her across a course like the wind, and a natural drive that takes and keeps her hunting to the front. She has so much fun you can't help but want to sit taller in your saddle and keep up to watch her work. She is just 7 months old and has been in the ribbons each time I have put her down in a trial so far.

Hi my name is Josh, I live near Salt lake city , I am a 27 year old male engaged to be married in april. I am an asphalt paver by trade and have recently went into buisness on my own. This is seasonal work so I have lot's of time to hunt in the late fall and winter. Covey birds of all varieties are my favorite, although I spend lots of time hunting forest grouse, sage grouse, and pheasants as well. I hunt duck's once or twice a year, and I usually get suckered in to going out on the deer hunt for a day or two, and I usually guide an elk hunter every year. But my passion is in the uplands. I hunt utah , idaho , and nevada every year, the dakota's every other year, and occasionally make it to arizona, wyoming, and montana. I have also hunted in Louisiana, and ohio but doubt I will make these trips frequently. I have a 5 1/2 year old english pointer (videl) who has been to all of these locations as well. Her favorite is chukar's. We are planning on getting another dog in the spring either another ep or a gsp. We don't get out to trials but I hunt with a few guys who go out often. Maybe one day. Nice to meet ya-all!

Well I have been here since January and just saw this thread....

I am Gary, aged 43, married, with three kids: two boys ages 13 and 11 and a little girl age 4. We have a 12 week old Brittany, a 6 year old cat, and a 6 month old hamster named Mary.

I work on Wall Street in Structured Finance and moved to the East Coast to work in NYC about 10 years ago. I am originally from Texas - raised in Houston and went to UT.

All of my "redneck propensities" were developed on my own beginning in my teens. My Dad was not a hunter but I got taken along on a couple of corporate hunts he got invited to. That got me hooked on guns and I got a shotgun and later talked my mom into getting me a .357 for college graduation. I self-pursued hunting and guns without the benefit of a mentor, and twenty years later find myself an avid upland hunter and clay shooter. I want to start waterfowling too - as well as grouse and woodcock. But I could shoot clays all day long if I had the opportunity. I look forward to shooting registered targets one day when my kids are out of the house. I had put guns on hold for a few years and have really gotten back into it about 2 years ago and one of my sons is into it too.

I tend to get obsessive with things and now it's gun dogs and I will admit I spend way too much on GDF!

You guys and gals have been great!!

my name is Tom, 27, married. 2 dogs, 4 year old english cocker and 8mo GSP. Currently am working on a PhD in chemistry.

I enjoy spending time in the outside working the dogs, and watching them work. I hunted most of my life in one way or another. Only started upland hunting 4 years ago when I first receive Max, the english cocker as a graduation gift. I can safely say I am now hooked on bird hunting with dogs. If any of you are in my area send me a PM and we can get out and look for some birds!

I'm 37 and have been thinking of getting a bird dog to hunt Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock in Northwestern Pennsylvania. Not sure what breed of dog is best for these type of birds but, I really like the GSP. I have had beagles before and lost them during a divorce, so I'm not exactly new to dog training and handling. I enjoy training dogs and would very much enjoy the time and energy put into training a staunch pointing dog. I am a member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and am getting ready for a deployment to the big sandbox, so I will not be getting a gundog untill I return, but I thought I could use the time I have untill then to learn all that I could about pointing dogs.

Hello! my name is Sherry, I live in SW Pa. Married 27 yrs (to the same guy), live on a farm with 2 horses, 4 dogs (1 Doberman, and 3 X-racing Greyhounds) I have been privileged to have cared for 2 English Springer Spanials over my life time. Both were adopted from a back yard breeder, one was deaf in one ear, and the other had a fused hip joint, making them unsuitable for field work. I am a member of Monica's Heart Greyhound Adoption, Altoona, Pa. and involved with Greyhound Adoption for many years.

Admittedly, I have very limited knowledge of the finer points of hunting, training, or field work of the hunting/gun dogs. I do see and admire the beauty of the various breeds, doing what they do best. My main focus is painting these beautiful dogs, aswell as other breeds, capturing the essence of their spirit in my artwork.

I reciently donated several pieces of original artwork, one piece was donated a Lab Rescue in NC, another to IBR (Illionis Birddog Rescue) for a fund raiser. There names were given to me by a member of the Greyhound Forum where I am a member. I contacted IBR, and one of their members was kind enough to send me several photo's of a resuced Pointer as reference material.....and from those photo's and others I have obtained from my Vet I am working on a series of "Hidden Image" pieces showcasing the Hunting/Gun dog breeds.

I joined this list to learn more about these dogs, which will enable me to refine my artwork. Hopefully capture a little some of who they are!

Thank you for accepting me as a member, and I'll try not to ask dumb  questions.

Welcome to GDF...this is a great bunch of people with a wide variety of subject matter for your artwork, I'm sure.

ask all the questions you like...and if you want to come see some dogs in action I bet you are pretty close to me. I am in the very southwestern corner of PA, literally! We have horses and a whole kennel full of working Brittanys, plus one Irishe Red and White Setter.

Would love to see some of your work...can you PM your website if you have one?

Name: Don Powell Age 51
From: Troy, Missouri
Dog: GPS maile 1 1/2 years Gunner

I have 2 kids both is college. Now that the kids are mostly out of the house I have time to work with my dog. I got Gunner from Cadens' Kennels last January and had them start him over birds. I did some NSTRA trials with him last fall and didn't do very well in the trails but learned a lot about handling and training. This forum looks like a great place to find and share info.

About me

Post by steady on point » Tue Feb 05, 2008 3:07 pm

I am male, living outside of Woodstock, Illinois. I raise Brittanys and traing all pointing breeds. Have been using the West/Gibbons method of training for 8 to 10 years.

I had the chance to attend one of Dave Walkers seminars, attended the West/Gibbons seminar in Texas a few years back and really do well with their methods.

I have been training pointing dogs for 25 years, having originally been from West Texas chasing quail around. Recently built a new kennel and training facility with the intention of training full time in the next few years. Currently compete in AKC Hunt Tests at all levels and am starting a dog in NSTRA this year for the first time.

I hunt Texas twice per year, South Dakota once during the opening week and the UP of Michigan for Grouse and Woodcock a few times. My passion is bringing out all of a dogs potential and breeding Brittanys for the best possible dogs.
