Hello, my name is Marcus and I live in North Fort Worth. I am 42 years old and have spent the last 18 years in the US Navy. I grew up hunting wild pheasants in Northern California, back when you could find birds there. Always had springers as a kid, the were just never trained beyond what they did naturally. I now have a 15 month old FBECS and she is fantastic. While I am certainly a novice trainer and probably the dogs biggest limitation, her desire and instincts continue to amaze me. Have had some great assistance from a local Spaniel club and look forward to continuing to learn and working to develop my dog. Thank you for including me in this group.

My name is Vince and I am from Alvinston Ontario Canada and currently the Property Manager for a mid size municipality. I am in my eary 50's and have been hunting on and off for the last 40 plus years. I have been happily married for 30 years and have three grown children . I have had a variety of working dogs over the years that included, Labs, Irish Setter and 21 working Siberian Huskies that i trained for recreational sledding and later to compete in dog sled racing. Most recently have switched over to UK working Labrador Retrievers(breeding), English Springer Spaniel and a new addition in the spring of 2019 a UK working English Cocker Spaniel. I do not compete in field trials but I train as if I do because of my competative nature. I am always looking for new training methods or improving on past methods and focus on building a strong bond with my working dogs. My hunting companions are family members first and live in our home. I enjoy pheasant hunting, rabbit, grouse, duck, goose, pigeon and turkey hunting.

I am 65 years old and will purchase a French Brittany pup in June, 2019. Back in the early 1970's I had an English Pointer that I later sold to be a field trial dog. Then I purchased a GSP named 'Shot' that I really, really enjoyed. I trained Shot myself on wild pheasants in Central Illinois. Shot was very steady to point, but paid no attention to a downed bird. I want to train my own French Brittany on wild birds and teach her to retrieve. I want to hunt, Sharptail, Ruff Grouse and pheasants. I am a soybean breeder in North Dakota. I am married and have 3 step-sons and 3 grandsons. I have learned a lot from this forum and purchased 'Perfect Start' DVD as well as a Jeremy Moore video on obedience training for a puppy.

Hello GDF! New member here. Long time big game hunter who did some upland game hunting decades ago, but now I am getting back into birds. I'm looking to getting into hunting Chukar and grouse, which are the most common birds in my area. I might do some waterfowl hunting later on.

How old are you?? Late 30's... I feel old answering this.
Male or Female?? male
What do you do for a living?? At the moment I'm in the military hanging out in Afghanistan. I will eventually be back home being a self employed engineer.
How long you been hunting/shooting?? 30 years
What kind of hunting do you do?? Right now only elk, but trying to get into Chukar and grouse.
What kind of dog(s) do you have?? None right now, but I will likely be purchasing a German Shorthair Pointer.
How long have you had dogs?? I grew up with Brittanies and doing field trials, however I absolutely will NOT be doing that at first.
You into any field trials, show, competition or anything like this?? NO!
Location: Utah

My name is Stephen, I’m 45 and live in Long Island,NY. I’ve been hunting upland, waterfowl and big game for 30 years. I’m currently engaged to be married this February. I am a waterfowl and Whitetail hunting guide during the winter and a charter boat Capt during the summer in Montauk. I had 3 Labs that were FT dogs. I will be picking up my new GSP next Saturday and gonna get into the pointing dog games now. I’ll also be using him as one of our guide dogs for our preserve hunts. My hobbies used to be hunting but with being a guide I honestly don’t really get to do to much hunting for fun anymore. I’ll usually book a hunt out in the mid west for deer with an outfitter that we swap hunts with. Absolutely love that I found this site

Hello All...
51 year old family man, lifetime sportsman, I grew up back east (Pennsylvania) and moved west in 1998. I've lived all over the west Wyo, CO, MT and WA. Formerly a licensed outfitter in the state of Wyo. I've not had a bird dog for over 18 years and to be honest I miss it. Growing up back east when there was still good hunting if you had a good dog - all the tradition and camaraderie is forever engrained in me. With my recent acceptance of a position in ND, this seemed like a sign. So I'm all in on a search for our family bird dog. This placed seemed like the place to be... so here I am...

Hi, Mike Zombek from Ohio. 57 years of age, work at a pharmaceutical plant as a maint tech. I bow and gun hunt for deer for 37 years. My wife of 31 years had to put her 12 year old English setter down due to kidney failure. She needed another dog take care of so she found a lewellyn/English setter. We did not hunt her first dog but we would like to try the field trials with her new dog. I'll have a bunch of questions for you lady's and gents.
Thanks for having me on this forum.

47 year old Millwright from Michigan here. Married with four kids. Love to hunt and fish anything in season. Had two springers that both passed last year. Just brought home a French Britt pup. Transitioning from flushers to a pointer should be interesting. lol This will be the first time doing the training myself. Wish me luck!

Maybe I posted this info in wrong place? I'm Pat(rick) and I live in NW Ontario, Canada. I'm a disabled American veteran and retired from US National Park Service. Have lived here (mostly) since 1989 but originally I'm from Montana and return there frequently to hunt and fish. I have been shooting birds and raising hunting dogs since age 12 ... fifty-four years ago this fall. Mostly Labs since then but one French Brittany. She and two black Labs live with me now. Not into shows or trials. I don't care much for crowds. In fact, I almost always hunt alone. Stick almost entirely to publicly accessible land (fed or state or "Block Management" ranches in Montana). Wild game belongs to everyone. I don't need to clean birds so badly that I have to keep someone else from what they rightfully own.

Im in Alabama. Early 50s getting back into fooling with bird dogs after taking a break to get two children through school and sports etc. Then went through some health issues and throuh all that I kept promising myself if I can get back on my feet Im getting another puppy. So for Christmas my wife got me a beautiful english setter puppy out of Tricky "bleep" kennels in Selmer, TN. I knew mr moore from my prior bird dog days and nstra trials. Tricky "bleep" Bama Nick "nick" is 5 mo old and really doing well. I have entered him in the puppy stakes in April at the nbha trial in Alabama. I realize hes young but he hunts hard runs well and Id like to get him involved early and bring him along slowly as we go. I live in north west Alabama. We have several acres and a pretty good set up for training. Pigeon loft, johnny house, training table barrels whoa post , remote launcher, e collar etc. Would enjoy meeting others in my area that might not have the space or tools to train. Im glad to share my space tools knowledge and experience with others.

Hello, Metromess is my home. Hunted all my life, have a 4 yr old female GSP. First one. Amazing dog. At 11 months she tracked a gutshot deer for me for 400 yards through so of the roughest stuff you have ever seen and located it in the middle of a briar patch. Points, retrieves does everything I ask of her. She just needs a better hunter!

Hi all. I'm a 44 year old male from western New York. I teach at a community college. I have a wife and 2 daughters. I've been hunting for over 30 years, big and small game. I've been out west elk hunting. I started waterfowl hunting in college and continue off and on. I have a 4 year old yellow lab male who has issues with water and loud noises. He's a great family dog though. My real romance is ruffed grouse. My dad shot one when I was a kid and let me carry it. I couldnt believe the intricate feather pattern. I have been in love ever since. However, grouse numbers aren't very high around here so I putter around aimlessly and dogless every winter after deer season in hopes of encountering Mr. Ruff. I've encountered very few,and shot fewer, but I love it. I've always wanted a pointing dog. I had a chance to hunt behind a pointer last winter. We didn't find any birds, but I loved following the dog. We've always been a one dog family so I figured I'd have to wait out our lab. Fortunately, the stars aligned, and my wife caved, and I recently acquired a 14 week old brittany male. I named him Jake. I've been lurking on this site ever since trying to increase my knowledge on training. I'm super excited and will have lots of questions for the wealth of knowledge that exists here. Thanks

My name is Max. I live in Bozeman, MT. Work in ND in the oil patch. I have a Brittany pup named Tubbs who is 8 weeks. Starting in a couple months I’m going to leave him with a trainer while I’m away on hitch due to my schedule. I’ll pick him up and the trainer is going to give me homework to work on when I’m on days off. Right now my wife and boys are helping out with some really basic puppy stuff.

I hunt Pheasants and sharpies E MT and ND and Huns and the occasional rooster or blue grouse near me. I grew up hunting grouse and woodcock in NE PA with my grandfather and his dogs. This is my first pup. Looking forward to it. Fully expecting it to be different than I imagined and challenging. I’d like to believe I’m old enough now to have the patience I lacked as a younger man. Not trying to compete or anything fancy just finds lots of birds and hopefully kill a few. If anybody is ever in my neck of the woods and looking to chase some birds holler at me. I’ve logged lots of miles around here sans canine and with friends’ dogs.

My name is Brad I am 50 years old and live in south central Missouri. I chased quail along with my father and our setters form a young age. He also introduced me to Turkey hunting and I have been obsessed with since the first long beard stepped out in front of my .410 Stevens sxs at the age of 8. This spring will be my 43 Turkey season. I am lucky to work for a boss that have a passion for conservation as well as upland hunting. We are able to spend a lot of time in the fall pheasant hunting north central South Dakota and south central North Dakota. Recently I have been working with Quail Forever and the USFS to do habitat improvements on USFS lands in my area. My latest project is named Rowdy he is a 4 month old Llewellin Setter.

Poppy here. Male and retired. I have been hunting upland and water since the late 50's. My wife and I owned and trained pointers(past) and retrievers (current). We started with the bird dogs as quail were plentiful until surface coal mining greatly reduced the acreage that I had permission to hunt. We switched to retrievers and, since owning, we have trained for the field and the conformation ring. We also participate in akc hunt tests. I have hunted in nebraska for pheasant when we had our pointers.

My name is Zach. I'm 34 and live in Idaho. I've been hunting all my life, but am relatively new to upland hunting and very new to pointing dogs. Have always had labs, as my primary pursuit (in regards to birds) in the past was always waterfowl. The last couple years I've dabbled more in chukar and pheasant hunting, and am excited to continue that and add in some of the other upland species we have in this area. I've got one lab left, a 10 year old male, and just recently picked up my first GWP, a 10 week old male named Boone. I've been reading training books for versatile dogs and gleaning what I can from the internet. Hoping to pull plenty of wisdom from the experience of others on this site.

Hi folks, I’ve been lurking for some time. I have been hunting for almost 40 years. I have never had bird dogs, but I have hunted with them. My golden retriever enjoys hiking with me, but she isn’t really hunting or retrieving. I have a new pup that I will be training to hunt.

Hello, I’m new around here and joining to read more about dog training and to enjoy pictures from the field. I have been a hunter for 40 years from Ohio to the south to the west. I live in Colorado and hunt here and nearby states. I have always hunted upland game and in the past decade I have been big game hunting also.

I have never had a hunting dog before, and I am beginning on that now. I want to learn how to train my pup to hunt and retrieve. I hunt upland, and I think I’ll try to learn waterfowl also. I joined the local Hunting Retriever Club and I hope to participate in trials on that local circuit.

I have two dogs. Bella is my baby girl. She doesn’t hunt, per se, but she goes everywhere with me. She loves water, snow, the mountains, people, fur, and everything else Golden Retrievers love. She is from a backyard breeder and doesn’t have any recent field line in her. I still love to have her along with me!

Here is the new fellow in the house. His name is Cody and he is bred from field lines. He is confident, curious, driven, and resilient. I hope to harness that ability and train him for HRC trials and for upland hunting.

Hello everyone.
I am 72 years old. I have been breeding English Setters for over 40 years and have produced many field trial winners as well as outstanding hunting dogs.
I trained professionally for many of those years and ran a shooting preserve on our farm.
My passion has always been grouse and woodcock although texas quail can be just as exciting.
I started hunting as a child with my dad and several of his close friends and have never regretted that great start.
I tend to shoot fewer birds these days because as the saying goes. "If you shoot the bird the next dog can't point it."
That's about it for me.
Look forward to participating in this great message board.

What's up everyone? My names Mike and I am 28 years old with 0 hunting experience! However, I am picking up a gsp puppy next week so I thought this would be a good place to connect with people in the community with far more experience than me. My father quail hunts and currently has a Griff.

He would like to send my pup to a hunting/obedience school around 6 months so that he can take him hunting. I think it would be good for the pup as an outlet of energy and I myself am looking to pickup some sort of novice hunting skills to take him and keep him happy. I currently work in sales for a real estate company and work from home so I have a ton of time to dedicate to training the dog.

I look forward to what is to come and engaging with everyone here!

My names Robert, also 0 hunting experience, I used this forum for research before I purchased my now 13 week old GSP. What an awesome dog, probably the smartest I've ever owned.

Currently working with a lead and check chord with him, also have already purchased the DT Systems Master Retriever 1100, but I want him to be sure that understands the targeted "here" and and sit and heel. He understands here and sit, still working on leash etiquette though. Will be starting collar conditioning to recall this weekend, then after he grasps the concept of heel, ill begin collar conditioning to heel.

As of right now, place training hasn't happened yet and struggling with potty training, but he's getting there!

Hello my name is Beau (Bo)

Been on her a lot in the past and again now, I’ve been a bird hunter for a couple decades now and have had several shorthairs. Just lost my last one suddenly a few months ago and have decided to make the switch to a GWP due to the way they handle the cold weather better. We pick up our new girl in a couple weeks now.

Also have a beautiful little field golden that is my sons dog and a good hunter, but I’m a pointer guy and just can’t get used to hunting behind a flusher at all.

Lots of awesome info on here and I enjoy reading all about everyone advice whether it’s good or bad.

I have been using Dogs as indicators for many years now, stating with G.S.P s' then G.S.P cross Boarder Collies, and now training a full Boarder Collie. I train these dogs to walk just in front of you around 5 yards, to find deer and point when close in thick bush.

My name is Jack and I'm from central Minnesota. I am currently a freshman at UW-River Falls. I have been hunting all my life but have just recently gotten into bird hunting with my Shorthair Rudy. I got him from a teacher of mine and so far he has been a great dog. I just finished my second season with him and it has been fun watching him figure things out. I mainly hunt pheasants and occasionally grouse. I don't do any field trials or anything with him but would be interested in maybe doing something in the future. I enjoy learning more about all breeds of dogs and have enjoyed reading through posts on this forum for a while, I am happy to finally be a member.
