Pointing dummies

Post by Johnb93 » Thu Feb 22, 2018 4:53 pm

I have a 9 mo old GSP ESS cross. Yes he is half pointer half flusher. He does point when he is interested in the birds hiding in the bushes. He fetches and delivers to hand quite well and has done a very small amount of work with blind retrieves. I want to make sure that I don't discourage pointing. Any ideas on exercises to incorporate pointing and holding it? This is a novice question, but i'm a total novice. attempting to train my first puppy.

Live birds, live birds, live birds...either wild or pen raised. Take him out and let him run and explore.

I had the exact cross when I was in college and was also a novice trainer. He was real steady on birds that didn't run. When birds ran he flushed them. So I taught him to stay in shooting range. He wasn't a big dog, about 35-40 lbs, so he was great at getting into thick brush and getting bird out. If it had feathers he'd bring it out and deliver to hand after training to do that.
