TWH Filly for sale

Post by Better Birddogs » Mon Aug 04, 2008 12:15 pm

Here is the story with Sweets. She is great horse with no major problems (other then pawing). I bought Sweets from a couple in Feb with the understanding that she was a two year old and that she would be ready for my girldfriend to start riding this fall on a limited basis. Well it turns out that Sweets is two this month and she will not be mature enough or big enough to really start riding until maybe the spring trial season. Here's my problem, I have one good dog horse and needed a second for my girlfriend. Sweets isn't going to be ready until probably next Spring so, having said that I'm going to sell Sweets and buy something that my girlfriend and I can ride now. It's a shame because this filly has a great gait and a very good brain in her head. My girlfriend has been on her a couple times in the last two weeks and she is great with it. She takes to everything with ease and will make someone a good dog horse I know but I need something this fall. Sweets stands in at a respectable 14 hands right now and will definitely grow into her legs and be a full 15 hands when its all said and done. I live approx 75 yards from a busy set of train tracks so consequently Sweets is afraid of nothing. She just was trimmed for the first time and she was great. She'll load in my little two horse bumper pull trailer great and has not problem being in it at all. Sweets' only problem is that she is too small and too young and she can't help that. I'd like $1000 for her but may negotiate with the right person. I'd like to see her go to someone who has a couple horses to ride and can let Sweets stand in the pasture and grow up a little bit. Sweets has been staked out, bathed, clipped, loaded and hauled and takes all new things in stride. My girlfriend got on her for the first time last week in the yard. I led her around and then we put a bit in the horse and my girlfriend rode her around in our pen for about 20 minutes with NO ISSUES. This is going to be a nice horse. She is black with four white socks and very flashy moving. PM me for pics of this horse if you're interested. I live in Kansas. This horse is a steal I think at this price.

Here are a couple of pics of this horse.

Better sounds like Sweets is a special and intelligant girl for just being 2. Those colts are the kind you like to get. Sounds like your girlfriend and you are going about breaking her out similar to what I do with my colts. I also live in KS and would of been really interested had she not been a filly. We ride/buy nothing but colts/geldings. We've been through the filly/mare deal and they just seem to cause with our geldings to much trouble. I'm sure with all the great things and great sense that it sounds like this girl has you'll have no problem selling her. Wish I knew of someone looking for a filly but offhand I sure don't. You should post a picture of her. She sounds similar to my old man that is 26 yrs. old.
Good luck

Sure wish I could find a place for her. She sounds like the kind of filly you don't want to let get away.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I don't know how to add pics. I have several. My girlfriend was on her again last night with no problems. My girlfriend has a quarter horse that she thinks shes going to ride at trials. I have tried to talk some sense into her. She seems to think it will be ok. We'll see. This is a good horse.

There is no reason she can't ride a quarter horse. They are riden all day in many venues that are much more taxing than a trial. Gaited horses are sure nice but sure aren't a necessity. Go out in the cattle country and see how many gaited horses you find under those cowboys and they are working hard all day.

I agree with you Ezzy. My thing is that a quarter horse isn't physically able to travel at a rate that a gaited horse is capable of and still maintain smoothness. Even my diehard quarter horse girlfriend will tell you as she trotting next to my horse that is walking along that she wouldn't want to ride in that trot on her horse all day let alone all weekend. I know guys down in Dodge City that ride cows on Foxtrotters for this very reason. A Foxtrotter seems to be athletic enough to run cows.

I think there is also a difference between the weekend AKC HB trial pace and the AF HB pace. At least there has been in the couple of NGSPA trials that I've attended; we moved out pretty briskly.

Ezzy their are a lot of ranchers and cattle guys that like riding gaited horses to check their cattle on their big ranches. I've know some that have also used them to rope a nd compete in rodeos on them as well. If you noticed on my post with my horses on the best looking you all will notice that we have pretty beefy looking gaited horses, and if their young I guarentee in a year they'll be beefed up. Main thing with buying is looking at chest, legs and build of the colt/horse to see what you'll end up with.
Better, your girlfriend will probably be fine in weekend AKC horseback field trials riding her QH but if you start going and competing in the American Field horseback field trials the pace/gait does tend to pick up as Greg talked about. She might spend most of her time cantering/galloping her horse while everyone else is running walking or foxtrotting along. But there are people that field trial with QH.
Sweets is a pretty girl and someone is going to be very lucky to own her.
