Best place to buy Tack - Used or New

Post by daddyfid » Wed Jul 30, 2008 3:14 pm

Just bought my first horse and am looking for the best place to buy tack. I have an older trooper saddle and am needing to buy the misc items for the saddle and a breast collar. Where is the best place to buy this kind of tack?

look for tack auctions in your area. If you see a horse auction , usually they auction tack first. E-Bay , you can find some good deals there. Some things you may want to see first so the local tack shop, Tractor Supply or some feed mills.

Depending on what you want, Jeffers.com has some nice horse offerings. Be careful of no-brand salebarn stuff, as there's a lot of cheap saddles and bridles out there, that I've heard nightmare stories about. Denise

*I've also had good luck with Statelinetack.com. They have good quality items.

I buy a lot from Country Supply (www.countrysupply.com) and Schneiders (www.sstack.com) but didn't skimp on bridle, reins, breast collar and saddle bags. Those I bought directly from Haggis.

I like Larry Heskett myself. I think its Heskettsaddleworks.com I have two Tarpin Hills and I like them both. They're great to deal with also.

Brian~

We us National Bridle Shop (www.nationalbridleshop.com) it has everything strictly for gaited horses , State Line Tack (www.statelinetack.com) or I use our local farm store for buying halters, leads, some girths, fly spray, wormers (I worm every month regardless of time of year), will have some shots like 4 way (Eastern,Western, Venzualan & Tetunus) they'll also have saddle blankets, pads, winter blankets, summer sheets, some saddles (but if buying a western from a farm store make sure you can take it home and try it on your horse to make sure it's not to wide through the withers and not going to sit down on them and sore your horse badly if not padded up enough and if is to big that you can bring it back to exchange or refund. Most farm stores I've been to will let you do this. Your best bet so as not to get into any trouble is go into Tucker saddles @ www.tuckersaddles.com and look for saddles (they fit great on gaited horses or) or also can call or email National Bridle for saddles as well.

Hope have been some help. The horse looks nice. Tell us more about him.

If you are looking for quality tack, especially if you are looking for Tucker saddlery products, try these folks:

K-C Stables Tack and Supply 856-455-5342. They are located in Bridgeton, NJ but will ship.

I bought both my Tucker Troopers from them. I know a bunch of folks who have done the same. They are very good people.

For saddle pads I really like Wilson Dunn's trooper saddle pad. It is thicker than the rest and it doesn't slip. It is cut back at the withers so a horse with high withers won't get rubbed sore.

The bits I use are walking horse bits that you can mix and match. I like them a lot. Basically they are sidepieces and you can install any one of a variety of mouthpieces into the sidepieces with screws.
