Now don't start poking fun at me  ...I have 3 gaited horses but want a mini donkey/Burro as a pet. We had them growing up and I really would like another one. I am looking in the NY/PA/NJ/OH region. If anyone has any leads please let me know..........

Contact the BLM wild horse and burro division for an adoption site near you. You should get the site. I believe they are still $75 and they are easy to domesticate.

I agree they are music in the morning when they bray you awake.

PS here's the link: http://www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/prog/wild_h ... vents.html

I've seen several listed lately in PA on Craigslist. Just search the farm and garden section for different areas around you and you should find some.

I just LOVE mini donkeys!!! I'm in Virginia and there are some places here, one I have visited just because I was interested in them. I will try and find the one I visited, I can't remember the name but it was down toward the Culpeper, VA area...very nice folks.

I can't imagine them pulling a cart! But I think they'd make really cute pets. I am NOT showing my wife that Craig's List ad however...

I know that many beef cattle farmers buy them to protect young calves from coyotes ie the donkees will run the coyotes off. It may be true, or it may just be marketing. My Grandfather bought a pair, and they were always in the opposite end of the field from the cows.

We had them for years! My last one died last year at 32 yrs old.
They are great pets, cheap to keep and just fun. Warning however, they will become protective of your horses, and will attack anything that comes into their pasture. Once they got to know my dogs, they were fine, but if a strange dog come in..... all bets are off. They will chase them and try to stomp them.

The other caution is not to overfeed them, or try to be to nice when it comes to food. They founder at the drop of a hat.... so very little grain and the cheapest hay you can find. Remember, these are critters of the desert, they don't need much to survive and thrive.

Mine were named Aristotle and Jackie O'nASSis, have fun when you get them!
