Is 12ft stock area enough for 4 horses?
Is 12ft stock area enough for 4 horses?
Input would be greatly appreciated.
I am in the process of ordering a 24 ft. featherlite stock/combo trailer so I want to make sure I cover all my basis. Right now I am looking at 6ft living area, 4ft mid tack (saddles and dog crates), 14ft stock area. Thinking 6ft might be small for 2 adults and 2 children.
I was thinking about switching to an 8ft living area, 4ft mid tack but that would leave only 12ft for 4 houses.
Do you think 12ft is enough for 4 horses?
Thanks,
Brian

Re: Is 12ft stock area enough for 4 horses?
Not knowing the size of your horses, I can't say for sure. I know that would not work for our horses. Then again, we have to buy Warmblood sized equipment!
Why not do a mock-up with some boards? Just lay out a section the size of your trailer and try different splits. Or ask your salesman to bring out a trailer so you can try it out.
And I would love to have new Featherlite, congratulations!

Depends on how wide it is if it is 7' wide it may be anything under I would say may be a little snug.
Has nothing to do with luck just boot leather and a fine GWP...

I think 12' would be large enough for 4 horses.

We can fit 4 walking horses in a 8x8 stock area if we alternate which side we tie them up. The last horse knows the routine, so he throws his shoulder and hip into the 3rd horse to make sure there is enough room for him.

Re: Is 12ft stock area enough for 4 horses?
Four horses will be an easy fit in 12 feet ,I would be more concerned about the 4 ft mid tack , dont do it on a slant , square it off. It will work a lot better
Re: Is 12ft stock area enough for 4 horses?
FYI, most showers are made to go in the slant side and squaring it off will decrease the angle in which to trailer the horses. Lay out is the key to it. A 12x 7 foot area isn't, in my opinion, big enough for 4 horses in a slant load application. You'll need closer to 16'. Much depends on how your loading them for a haul. Not sure where you are but I have a friend selling a 30' 4 horse that needs some TLC. It's cheap and the kind of trailer you can make anything out of.

Re: Is 12ft stock area enough for 4 horses?
She's wanting $10,000. The back ramp was messed up and is going to cost $2,000 to fix and she doesn't have the money. She wants to unload it, as is, and have someone else take the expense in the deal. I was going to buy it but after fixing it up it would have burned all my funds. I actually talked to a dealer this weekend at the horse show. He looked at it and eased my mind it would cost around $2,000 to put it right. If your interested let me know I can snap some real pics of it and maybe work out something in order to get the dealer to fix it.

FYI, I currently own a 24ft keifer stock combo and there is enough room to haul 5 horses very comfortably, without it being a slant, if i was going to order a new trailer i would want the tack area as square as possible so that i could load my crates as efficiently as possible, without the use of wasted space in the slant corner. For that matter, Iwould ask them to make me a movable pin-in wall between the horses and the tack that could be moved back 2ft if i needed more room in the tack area. As for the shower there is lots of options. by the way my trailer is 7ft wide. Also consider a rear tack area and some other door set-up other than what they have on a stock trailer

Re: Is 12ft stock area enough for 4 horses?
Thanks for all your input. I am not ordering a slant, the wall at the end of the living area is straight. Both sides of the midtack will have straight walls. The stock area will be a full (no slant) 12ft long and 8ft wide.

Brian ~
We have a straight 10' box in our trailer and we carry 5 horses head and tailed very easily. The trailer is also 8' wide. But they have pleanty of room heck with 14' you could carry 7 head. lol
Are you guys going to the Ozark??? If so we'll see ya there. Have a great season otherwise.

Robbi,
We won't be at the Ozark trial. Unfortunately we have other commitments. We were bummed to hear that you were not going to make the GSP trial last weekend at Pony Express.
Steph ran her dog for the first time in open derby and took second. She was so excited when her dog went on point that she forgot to get off her horse to shoot. It was quite entertaining. Hopefully we will run into you soon.

If I were spending that kind of money I would have the sales reprsentiitve bring it out to ensure it is exactly what you wanted.
