So tell me about "single footers" & "speed rackers"....
So there are a lot of video's on youtube of "Single Footers" and "Speed Rackers" and I've watched quite a few, but what can you folks that really know "dog horses" tell me about them. From the video's, they are bad as he!!; looking to be extremely smooth, extremely fast and extremely fun.

Had one for 14 yrs. So much go but with all the control you wished. She is the horse my friends and me judge others from. When I first got her I had problems with her walking too fast. Arms would get tired holding her back and sometimes judges would say slow down. I finally found the right bit and everything was fine. I sometimes get tempted to get another.

They're fast ,the good smooth ones are hard to find. Some of the faster ones are more suited for flat ground most are standard & walking crosses.

Brittguy,
I wondered if they may be a bit fast paced for working dogs in AKC Trials, but imagined they would be just fine for AF, where the handler has more room to do what they need. Did you ever notice it causing difficulties with their gait at speed later, when they were used so much at just a flat walk? I guess what I'm trying to say is, that my TWH's will get "lazy" on their gaits from spending so much time at a flat walk and wonder if it affected yours similarly.
I was hoping you might reply Red. Could you clarify "Some of the faster ones are more suited for flat ground"? Would you suggest that they may not be a good horse for Trials, Trial settings as far as the type of terrain and ground, and working dogs? If a fella wanted to go look at a couple; What stables would you recommend as a good starting point in the Eastern U.S.? Any other thoughts?

Re: So tell me about "single footers" & "speed rackers"....
Mine was double registered TWH and Racking. I mentioned when I first bought her I had trouble until I found the correct bit. Then she was great. I could keep her at any speed I wished.Never had to think of getting her into a cantor or gallop. She was far from lazy.Maybe I was foolish but I could get her into a fast rack in fields and she was surefooted. I never had her clocked but she moved as fast as the fast ones you see on youtube.

A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.

Our Paint Joe is a Racking horse. He is a TWH/Standardbred cross. He has a lot ot gears... He has a nice fast walk. Both Dennis and Tyler can get him moving out fast and it is SMOOOOTH....Sometimes the in between is rough though. His canter is the most comfortable one i have ever experienced though....

Do they look like they would be a lot of fun or what!
I believe I'll have to ride Joe again in two weeks........
Loving Tucker, awesome, awesome dog horse; butttt........ There's ALWAYS a "but" isn't there? I figure two lil girls are going to be looking to have their own horses in a year or two, so I think I'm going to do hand me downs with Zip and Tucker to them and I'm going to "Upgrade"

I grew up on the race tracks, saw a lot of horses run, never saw this tho. Kinda looks like fun maybe. Why do they want the big lick tho I been reading about? Some trainer was kicked out for soaring and such recently.
Is this the gait they want in them little buggy races? I saw a few of them in Chicago years ago and they were fast.

Some of those look like they are in fast forward.tn red wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoLbm2T-hK0
So Red what would be the advantage to this over a standard walker? From the looks I would say only speed? Do they gait as well as a good walker at more usable speeds?
Talk about pushing a dog! Better start crossing greyhounds into the pointers so they can keep up!
Re: So tell me about "single footers" & "speed rackers"....
We talked about that Andy and this fast gait, specifically a "Speed Rack", isn't going to be good on your average Trial course; but still looks like a he!! of a lot of fun to ride. Something about uneven terrain throwing a horse moving that fast out of it's gait..... well, you can imagine the results. I'm thinking this would make a good Scout horse on a smoother course thoughACooper wrote:Some of those look like they are in fast forward.tn red wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoLbm2T-hK0
