This is for you pigeon guys. I brought home some Homer pigeons about two months ago. They are doing great but here is my question, they are laying eggs but not sitting on them. I find them all over the floor of the coop but not in their nests. Any answers why?

What temperatures are you experiencing right now; in my coop unless your looking quite often its hard to catch my birds that are sitting on the floor, sitting on their eggs, unless checking at night then not always, but they still hatch. And it has been my observation that birds that have been hatched on the floor seem to nest on the floor. If they were mine I would put some nest material on the floor and let them build their own nest. And watch them.

About 1/3 of my pigeons nest on the floor instead of the nest boxes. They all hatch okay.

Don't know why but my ferals lay less on the floor than my homer's. Most on the floor do hatch out alright though. The one's that do the best hatch on the floor have put their nest out of sight normally and up against a wall. I don't care for it but I'vn given up trying to change it. Eggs in the middle of the floor, I toss. Sometimes for whatever reason birds will push an egg away from the nest. I just toss them too.

In my nest's lot of time's I leave birds to build their own pathetic nests. Not sure why they are called nest's! Three stick's and a bunch of poop! Anymore some of them have been making good nest's though. If they aren't making nest's I put a bunch of hay in the box's for them. Another thing I find is they don't seem to like nest right next to each other. Might be the ramp across the front of them or open front's. Had old T Shirt's hanging down for a long time and the birds liked tht, gonna have to put up some more.

One thing about birds on the floor, most seem to lay in a corner. Don't know why but they do. Nest's along the fall seem to get left. I'd put a few box's against the walls on the floor and put nest bedding in them, hay or straw. When the nest on the few box's on the walls, they always seem to choose the high box's. Usually I think they like privacy in their nest's.
