Quail flight pen floor? Wire or dirt?

Post by oldbeek » Tue Mar 24, 2015 5:49 pm

Will be building a quail flight pen. !0 ft X10 ft X 20ft for a small amount of quail. What is the advantage of a 1/2 inch square wire floor over just dirt. I am in a very dry area that hardly ever gets rain, and the pen floor will be drained well if it does rain. IF! we ever do get rain, a big rain would be 1 inch in 24 hrs.

Your survival rate will be higher on wire.

Play Sand is the way to go for your floor, My friend who raises about 500,000 pheasants a year and thousands of bobwhites and chuckars told me for a backyard breeder for game birds or pigeons to use play sand for the floor. It won't stick to your shoes and insects can't live in it. If you do buy any sand, make sure it's "play sand" I bought mine by the bag at the local lumber store. It's used for playground equipment.

Pen is finished. Washed river sand is the floor. Thanks!
