It's all the Germans and Irish that settled in Cincy. In 1893, the national average for consumption was 16 gallons per year, in Cincinnati, it was 40 gallons for every man, woman or child. Yuengling opened a brewery in Tampa about 10 years ago, so we've been enjoying it down here for a while. I hear the delay on selling it in Ohio was that Yuengling wanted to build another brewery to accommodate the predicted massive increase in demand - no kidding. Them Ohio folks are a bunch of drunks. At least all my Cincy relatives are.
I also was just told that Yuengling passed Sam Adams as the largest American brewery.
As far as specialty beers go - Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout is my favorite.
New Belgium Brewery has some good stuff. Fat Tire is pretty good, although I like their 1554 dark ale better.
I'm generally not a fan of wheat beers, but one I do like is Blue Moon.
There's a small brewery in Tampa called Cigar City Brewing. Pretty good stuff, but I don't think they're distributing outside of the state yet. They make a pretty good IPA.

Try brewing your own, you will have the best tasting beer that you have ever tasted. I get into this a few years ago and it's real fun. It's super easy too, get a kit and go onto youtube, you will learn everything you need to know to begin from it....BTW just about anything from Sierra Nevada is great.

I like Boulevard Wheat (made in Kansas City), Shiner Bock and then a Green Chile beer made at a local brew pub in Columbia, MO. The silver bullet when not going the microbrew route.

Yep, my grandparents immigrated from Germany in 1929, along with several of their siblings. They were heavily involved in Kolping, and I went to Schutzenfest every year when we still lived there. Took a tour of the Hudepohl brewery back when it was still around. Hudey Delight, good stuff ... NOT.Hookadooka BirdDogs wrote:

Try some Nordeast by Schells Brewery out of New Ulm. A little darker with good flavor.

Re: Beer?
I just tried another on Super Bowl Sunday. (And believe you me, I needed the whole batch to sooth my wounds).
Belfast Bay: Lobster Ale It is a red ale, similar to Gerry's but crisper. Pretty good. But way to expensive. $9.95 a rack. For that price I would been better off at PT's show club, cheaper beer, decent food and pretty, scantilly clad ladies serving and making me forget about the loss.

Winter calls for dark, richer beer. I like Murphy's when in the mood for a stout. The widget in the can works quite well.
Spaten Optimator is a another winter beer in the fridge this time of year. Got turned onto O'dell's 90 shilling which is another good one. If you like the stuff brewed in state, try Schell's Schmaltz's Alt (not really a true Alt though).

Nothing ends a good day in the woods like a Bells Two Hearted Ale, or two or three... Right now pick up a sixer of hopslam from Bells it will be a nice changeup for sure.
All their beers are pretty fantastic. Also a big fan of the Keweenaw Brewing company. If you can get a hold of any grab some Black Widow Black or Pick Axe Blonde. Dark and light respectively.
Heck after a sweatin in the woods any beer is good!

They're our new sponsor for QF and PF - so I felt obliged to give it a try - in the interest of work ya'know? I liked the Whitetail Whiskey better than the Blackberry. However, they both were not bad. The Whitetail is a bit smoother - more caramely.

I appreciate a fine single malt scotch, and my favorite by far is Laphroaig. But after hearing that some truly excellent and top shelf bourbons can be had for the same price of a average to good single malt, I have taken to trying some various bourbons, with Knob Creek being my favorite so far. I stumbled across Bird Dog, thought it sounded interesting and decided to try it. My local liquor store had to order it for me.
Here's my review: Sipped neat and at room temperature, it is vaguely reminiscent of cough syrup but not in an unpleasant way. Slightly sweet, but not syrupy. Taken on the rocks with a splash of water, it takes on an entirely different character. It becomes a cocktail, and is what I would imagine a Manhattan made with blackberry juice instead of sweet vermouth would be like. The sweetness is more apparent, and perhaps a little to prominent. Perhaps if cut with a true bourbon, like Maker's Mark or similar, it would seem less sweet and the blackberry flavor more subtle.
I believe I will try that this evening!
Oh yeah, beer: Can't go wrong with Guinness, but I really like the Belgian beers like Duval, Hoegaarden (great summer time beer), and Leffe. My favorite is Hoegaarden Grand Cru, but you have to go to Belgium to get it. I have not had it for a long time. Every day beer, I like most of what comes out of Sam Adams, but the Oktoberfest, Summer, and Winter are my favorites.

Huh, well, GDF does have a ‘General Chat’ section. A beer topic seems fitting for a ‘General Chat’ section and beer is something a lot of people on here have in common/enjoy. I actually made myself a spreadsheet of all the above beers that I haven’t had so I can give them a try, kinda fun. I personally enjoy tasting, learning, etc.. about different beers so this is a fun topic. At least people aren’t arguing, ridiculing, acting like jerks, etc....just a light hearted topic.Greg Jennings wrote:I like a cold beer myself, but we're going to have to do something for off topic threads.
