Dumb question but I have to ask..

Post by Ghosted3 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 2:24 am

Do people hunt coyotes for food. I know the vast majority kill coyotes as varmint control, but I didnt know if some people out there actually like to or have at least tried to eat yotes before. I had neighbors that lived on roadkill so nothing would surprise me, but with so many vids on youtube and so many people killin off the things I have just wondered if they have been being uses as a food source as well.

I belong to a predator hunting forum, and once in a while those guys will talk about coyote recipes.
i know I wouldnt eat one.....

A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.

I would have a hard time touching one, as parasite and disease ridden as they are, let alone eating one. Yuck. Drop them and leave them.

Kinda my line of thoughts about it as well, but I was just wondering.

Survival is one thing, killing them off as varmint control and then trying out a new BBQ recipe on them is a different story (imo anyways)

We have a group here in iowa that hunts them a lot, we shot 102 2 years ago, never shot one last year without the snow,
we hunt them for sport, although our county used to give a $10 bounty for them they dont anymore, we keep on shootin!

Even Skunks have been consumed by humans. :o Do you know if a cat is skinned & beheaded you can't tell the difference from a rabbit just to look at the carcas, must not taste much different either
an old timer told us while standing around the campfire he used to sell then as rabbits when he was in school.

Are you saying that you would rather eat a yote or a opossum?

We had some chinese guys ask us to bring them a coyote
So we got them one
Abbout a month later when we saw them again ...They said there was nothing they could do to make the coyote worth eating.

Helped my cousin skin one out and tan it to lay over the back of his couch. Nastiest smelling animal I have ever laid hands on. No way I would eat the meat off one.

My father and his famly ate possum in the late 1920's and 1930's, it was a part of their diet...
They took possum, and whatever else they could harvest to keep them from starving during the depression. They were farmers with a six mule farm in SE GA.

"There are" people that won't (or don't know how to use proper english) and I would put them a step lower in the gene pool also.

if you read Undaunted Courage, that author says that of all the animals that the men of Lewis and Clark killed and consumed on their trek into the Louisiana purchase territory (deer, elk, buffalo, bear, fish, beaver, etc.) their absolute favorite was........ dog. Learned to eat it from the indians, and by the time the trip was over they actually preferred it to anything else.

A friend cooked some coyote loins and fed it too us at a party, it was a big hit. We didn't know what it was. Later he told us and some people got upset but in reality, It's all mental. I would eat it again.

I think I would have to see the yote that I was about to eat (like a pic on the phone from the hunt or something) to see if it looked like a nice bigger healthy one or a small scraggly balding diseased looking one lol
