From what I've seen in kennels, poured cement is the way to go. This way urine runs off and fecal matter won't get stuck anywhere.

Through my own experience and others use concrete by the time you buy enough paving stones it would be nicer and cheaper to use concrete.

Ive seen rubber horse matts used, you just have to stay on top of keeping them clean.

My wife is in the horse industry and I think that if we ever built a barn it would be cement then stall mats then bedding. I've seen stall mats on just "groomed" dirt and there was a layer of urine and fecal matter under the mats. They will not keep all things from going under them especially if a dog starts digging at the corners.

best to have matts over gravel.

we always use cement, urine poors off if you angle it a few degrees
easy to hose off and keep clean and cool
easy to scoop snow off of

I've been using kennel decking from Farm Tek for a few years now, real happy with it. Also seems to be easier on the dogs skin. No bare spots like concrete.

I'm using it in the puppy pens and Whelping pens. Good stuff.

What is it setting on. Gravel, stone, clay?Combo of two?
Or concrete?

I have concrete: works good.
Any gravel or stone, pavers, mats etc. over dirt will retain odor, bacteria, etc. to some level.

I framed it up on treated lumber.

For me, concrete was the most sanitary and best way to go. I have a gutter that flows into a leach field. Since my dogs run free on a 1 acre fenced yard each day, I rarely have to clean up poop when I kennel them in the runs each night.

Helped a buddy of mine do one in brick that he had laying around then took some old conveyor belt put that on top. Think the whole project cost him about $200.
