dang porn posters, in the pigion coop thread

Post by markj » Wed Apr 23, 2008 6:15 am

was looking it over for ideas for my own coop. My 5 year old right next to me. Pics of the worst kind he sees, then the questionsstart. Man we need to hunt these folks down and beat em soundly about the head and shoulders. Where are they posting these from? Give me an IP and I will gladly look into it. May need to block them CIDRs to keep this stuff off your board. Lots of crap from Franceand China lately. Do a WHOIS on their IP and log a complaint with the owners of those IP blocks. Then block the IP blocks from getting to your server. Sucks a lot. I never thought my son would be exposed to that junk, it is not how I am raising him.

I know you mods are doing a great job and cannot be onit 24 hours 7 days a week. Sucks folks need to post this crap all over the internet. We need a season on them thar folks......

Thanks, Markj.
I agree 100%. I'm not smart enough to know what the answer is but this whole internet porn thing is crazy. Hopefully our lawmakers will come up with something soon that will be effective at restricting this stuff.

Guy's it's not a good deal at all. Grant has put countless blocks in. I have deleted 2 bad ones already this morning. Sorry it's just a slow process, beating these guys. ....."pear"

I'm not criticizing the moderators at all. Just the smut dealers.

I used to run a forum I even made it so you had to register to post and the porn guys quit but the medicine guys kept coming. It is a struggle. Moderator s just have to stay on top of it.

I wasnt beatin on the mods, they work hard for this finboard. The problem with lawsa is they do not apply to foriegn countries this is why they can do as they do here. Get an IP from the sever log, send it to me I will do a whois and find who "Owns" it and log a complaint then you can also block that IP or block of IPs from ever reaching the server. Sucks to have to do this, I did it in my last job on our web servers and thru the firewall with a explicit deny rule. Also some firewalls like the Cisco PIX can filter using cbac or content based access configuration. Yep that is what I do... Was a auto tech for 20 years, went back to college after first wife passed away and got into this line of work.

I sure can help out if you all want me to. No problems. Hate o have my 5 year old see that type of porn, it just isnt right for them to post it here on a non porn forum. Lots of free pron out there they should leave it there and not on boards that do not want it. Maybe we need to post dog stuff on their boards :) Just cant stomache them sites tho...

Ever see second hand lions? I feel like he did about his wife. "loved one woman with a passion you will never understand" :) God gave me two to love tho, am on my second wife and she is the only woman I wish to see with out cloths.. call me wierd but this is how I am....

I liked the way they "hunted" fish :) my brother and I took my nephew in after he told a teacher he was gonna shoot her age of 12. He is now a marine stationed in okinowa :) and one heck of a shot. Takes a man to raise a boy... he hunts with us, never misses. I love him like he was my own. Sis has a grandbaby, she is younger than I, makes me feel old. I have a 5 year old son too. That baby loves me, cries when I put her down. She will be a hunter too :) gottaraise em up to be independant of us so when we pass they dont founder in the water like a fish.

I wasn't beating on them either I was just mentioning that when a board becomes popular these things start happening and it is a lot of work to control it.

Grant has worked hard to block that kind of junk, and for the most part it works. There will be times when they get around the blocks, though, and those are times when we step up to delete the posts and the poster while Grant works on yet another block. It's tough staying one step ahead of these guys, but for the most part we're able to do it.

What's disturbing this time around, though, is that they've made posts within already established threads. When they start their own threads it's a lot easier to spot and delete.

We're going to be relying on all of you to help out too. If you see one, PM a moderator. Even if I'm not on the board I get an email when I receive a PM, and I think all the other moderators have that option enabled too.

Please include the URL of the thread in the PM. Else, we have to go looking for it.

If you really want to help out, send the username posting the porn to a moderator.

That's how we zap them. We have a utility that deletes the user and all their posts.

Can't one of those machine-reader-beating code thingies be incorporated into the registration process?
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

machine-reader-beating code thingies do not beat machine registration software. They are very good at recognizing the code. Online ticket reselling companies have been very good at getting through the code reading thingy.

I can grab their IP, but its basically useless... There's just so many of them and they keep changing... And even if you do contact an ISP, they protect their customers first... It's just a battle that never ends.

I think I'm just going to turn on Administrator approval for registrations and custom write a process for mods to easily activate/delete new accounts...

In the mean time, is it possible to classify the e-mail addresses and/or IPs used by the porn spammers and add the class to what is already looked for by "spam cop"?

I can add regular expressions to spamcop for pattern matching... We'll just have to recognize some pattern....

Just a thought.

If there is some pattern, it might help us out till you can get something more sophisticated deployed.

It is. And they've gotten around it. With spam, it's all about staying one step ahead of their adaptations. When they get through, we change and block. Then wait. When they get through again, we change and put up new blocks.

It's likely a never-ending process, and all we can hope for is more and more time between when we place the spam blocks and when they find ways around them.

Also, keep in mind, if even one of the spammers is an actual person, they can come in and register just like anyone else and decipher the blocks we put up. That opens the floodgates for all the bots to then adapt around the blocks.

GDF has got to be one of the biggest hunting related forums on the web. When a forum gets to be this big, there's only so much that can be done by the dedicated mods. I agree with grant and approving all people before becoming members. You probably can recongnize spam by the username readilly.
