carrying birds while training

Post by luke0927 » Mon Jun 30, 2008 11:22 am

what do you keep your birds in when training....i would like to have a back i could just reach down in and grab a bird and throw it out...something like on the prfect start perfect finish DVDs...i thought about just a vest but i figured they would come out....seems like you would want something that closes but is mess or something where they can breathe...any thing like this or something you have made.

When training at home I just take a burlap bag of birds and the 4 wheeler drive around and toss birds until the bag is empty then go back and get a dog.
If I am going off the property I take them in a wire cage and transfer them to the bag as needed. Sometimes I use a regular bird bag that is mesh they can be pruchased at most dog training sites.

I'm cheap. I use an old big purse with holes cut in it. Works fine. :)

Don't forget a matching hat...

This is what I use and I love it! It has 4 pockets in the front that will hold quail / chukar and enough room for other things (shells, water, bumpers).

When I am working young dogs and need to carry pigeons in the field I have a simple and cheap method of carrying birds. My wife will never darn my holey tube socks (except to say "darn socks, darn socks"), so I cut the toe end out and use them as a "bird tube". I slide a pigeon in the toe end. As he gets to the elastic it holds him tighter so he can't squirm out. Don't let him see light or he will try to get out. I only push him about half way through. Then I can carry several of these in the game bag of a light training vest. I even plant these in the sock for young dogs that are steady. When I want to flush I simply grab the toe end and give a jerk which pops the bird out. Simple, easy and free. Oh, wash them first.
