Going to Cabela's - Clothes suggestions
Hi All,
I know I have talked about this before but I am going up to Cabela's soon.
1-What socks do you recommend for hunting? I will be walking in the field so I don't want something "too warm". I think I heard smart wool?
2- I need a nice pair of long underwear. What materials are best and does Cabela's carry them?

I'm a big fan of the thinner Smartwool socks for upland hunting.
As for long underwear, I personally do NOT care for the UnderArmor shirts, but love their long johns.

Smartwool socks are great.GSPVIZ wrote:Hi All,

For long underwear I like Patagonia Capilene, with Merino Wool being a close second.

I second the Smartwool. VERY comfortable socks. I wouldn't get anything more than a medium thickness. With all that walking around, cold feet won't be an issue.

What is the deal with the sock liners? Are these necessary with the smartwool socks?

I have a box full of Long underwear tops. I almost never used them because when I'm walking they get too hot. I use the cheapie cotton ones because I wear the heck out of them. If it is chilly, I put on a long sleeve mock neck shirt(can't stand the feel of turtlenecks) instead of a t-shirt. The high collar of the mock neck keeps the heat in and the wind out from around my neck and upper chest. If it warms up, I can always take off the shirt because the mock neck I'm wearing can serve double duty.
Like I said earlier...smartwool is the bomb. The only thing I like more in the wrmer weather is coolmax stuff because it give excellent support. My ankles have been sprained and broken a few times each and I need a little help down there.
Cabela's just reintroduced a 100% polyester shirt. You gotta get a couple of them. The tight weave blocks the wind like a jacket and they are darn near as warm as the fleece because of that. Being 100% polyester, they wick away any moisture and they hold up in the field as well or better than a cotton or Chamois cloth shirt.
Unless it is REALLY cold, my typical upland gear would consist of smartwool socks(midweight) over boots of choice, long john bottoms over undershorts, 1000 denier faced hunting pants,
a cotton/poly mock neck under a chamois cloth or(preferably) Polyester close weave shirt. Hunting vest, left hand glove and orange cap.

Ray when you are talking about the 100% poly shirt, you mean the Under Armour type?

Under Armor is not 100% polyester. It has spandex in it making it stretchy. There are multiple yarns used to produce it.GSPVIZ wrote:Ray when you are talking about the 100% poly shirt, you mean the Under Armour type?

No I am not referring to an undergarment. The item is a long sleeved shirt. I think it was on the back cover of the winter or Christmas issue catalog. Basically it is a hunting shirt that is made from polyester that is woven to look and feel like a cotton flannel shirt, rather than fleece.
I have about six or eight good heavyweight chamois shirts that are still in their wrappers because once I started wearing the polyester shirts I never went back to the cotton chamois except for deer stand hunting in the cold.
The best part is when you wash them, they look and feel brand new, no wrinkles, no stains... nothing.

It's not a good idea to wear cotton in the winter. When wet, cotton will suck all the heat out of your body.
Cotton kills.
