Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
.....so what other hunting breed would you choose and WHY?
If I couldn't have a springer & size doesn't matter, I'd go with either a Gordon or an English Setter (yes, Big Steve, yes....)
Why? Sure is purty on a point.....
(if this thread has been asked before - sorry - couldn't find it)

No more English Setters? then I choose a pointer or a flushing breed or a beagle

If GSP's no longer exist. I choose Pointers. Heck I may get me a pointer anyways.

I have been around GSPs my entire life, so it would be hard to change, but I have always liked Weims. Lately I have read some stuff on Welsh Springer Spaniels and wouldn't mind learning more about them.

Re: Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
If no more setters I would be a pointer man-a point is a lot prettier with a high tail stickin in the air
Re: Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
I would choose a Brittany or Vizsla probably. Maybe consider an English Springer.

Awwww, I really didn't mean to be so blunt, but I was afraid some people would try to work their way around the theory and say "How Dead...."wems2371 wrote:First I would have a good cry, then go to therapy, and then probably look into Vizslas. Denise

Yeah, I shed a tear at "Dead".
Good question though, and I'd never really thought about it. I'm already a gsp addict.

No more shorthairs, then I would have a REAL good, white, hi tailed Wirehair (Oh, i already do)

I'm surprised nobody has said they'd just get a pointer and dock its tail.

OK, ....hmmm.... go ahead and (gently) Kill off both of the breeds you have & then what breed would you go for & WHY? Think outside of your breed(s) on this.....snips wrote:No more shorthairs, then I would have a REAL good, white, hi tailed Wirehair (Oh, i already do)
Re: Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
I'd have to go with zodiak on this one. English setter sounds good. Might look for one anyway. They sure are purty on point. Nice white silhouette with little dots of charcoal in there. Kinda makes me wonder what kind paint roller they use...

I have said it before and will say it again here...
If I could not have an FDSB pointer, for whatever reason, I would choose to hunt behind a dual registered or FDSB registered Irish Setter, sometimes called a "Red Setter".
I love to watch a nice dog do its thing and it really don't matter which breed.
I have watched a fair number of sperb dogs from several different pointing dog breeds do their thing, but the two breeds I mentioned are the ones that trip my trigger to the extent that I would want to own, train, hunt and handle one.

I would have to go with a Pudel Pointer. One size fits all. But can one run them in trials? (Registry?)

If my Shorthairs were Dead ?!?!?!
I'd probably be so sad I'd quit bird hunting and get a coon dog. But eventually I'd probably miss it and get a Brauque du Bourbonais. Or a maybe even a slick coated DD.

Re: Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
No more Brittanys???? I would have to go with a GSP, then a Visla, English Setter, GWP/WPG, Pointer, Irish Setter.
Re: Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
Well, I might try a Setter, or just quit. Gotta have a GSP, the browner the better.
Only two seasons, bird season and getting ready for bird season
Re: Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
Well it would be horrible to lose the English Setters... but I'd probably get another GWP or a GSP. Brittany's in the future anyways I think.

If I couldn't have any kind of Setter, I would go with an E. Pointer. I would make sure the dog is trained to not run out of the county.

Re: Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
If I couldn't own GSP's anymore, I'd definately go back to pointers.
Re: Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
i'd go wirehair and most likely will look to get one in the future anyway
Re: Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
I love my lab, but he wasn't my first choice of breed. My 1st choice was a GSP followed closely by a Weim. Ended up with a lab in a compromise with my wife. IF there were no more labs i would go back to my first choice of a GSP, if it's ok with my wife that is!
Re: Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
I already have a Ptr, and have had several. Do not want another. I think I would get a Boykin.

I'm with Denise... I would cry, probably need therapy and then look into Pudel pointers... a pointer with a docked tail isn't such a bad idea though... as long as I could get one that was solid liver...

More more Llewellins I think I would probably get a Brittany.

Re: Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
I've always liked english setters. I like how they look, I like watching them run, and every one I've met has had an outstanding personality.
I don't know how much more hard-headed they tend to be vs a Vizsla, and I wouldn't look forward to actually having to put more than 1/2 second into coat maintenance, but right off the bat, that's the breed I'd look at.

Re: Your favorite BREED of Dog is DEAD....
I have owned and hunted Labs, Springer's, GSP's, Pointers and now Setters. What would I choose? At this point in my life I think I don't really want to start experimenting with dogs that might run all over. I like to take easy going walks and just enjoy watching the dogs, Squirt and Bodie can really try me with their energy but I love them. I really had a great fondness for Springers but the memory of Skipper keeps me from looking into them again. His loss sent me to GSP's as a matter of fact.
I think when I hit about 70 my days with pointing breeds will be about over, medical troubles too. Will probably get a Boykin spaniel. always been courious about them and saw one hunt a bit last year, happy little guy that never ran off. Would fit real well in a fishing boat too.

Ya know, I might also take a look at this breed if I couldn't have a Springer... My sister had one & wouldn't get any other dog.... Yes, fitting in a boat is real important....!!!Don wrote:...... If I couldn't run Pointers, I'd definitely get another Shorthair. They are fun to hunt behind, and its even more fun to get Pointer guys hackles up when you run a Shorthair that cleans his Pointer's clock, like Cowboy use to do

Boy you sure said a mouthful there. It is so much fun to show up with "the wrong kind of dog" and put on a clinic.
Even if they don't give it to you...the looks on the faces speak volumes and it is definitely an invigorating experience.
I actually have had the pleasure of doing just what you alluded to, but in reverse. I cross registered my pointers to be able to run in AKC stakes, because there are quite a few more of them close to home than AF/AFTCA stakes.
Probably the nicest compliment I ever got about one of my pointers was from a GSP owner whose dog placed second behind my dog...in an open stake run by a GSP club.

Yeah Gary I would, but I'd have to invest in a whole lot of blaze orange or iridescent yellow accessories for the dog so I could spot the sucker in cover.glk7243 wrote:Geesh Ray you mean you'd choose an ugly dog like this over a pretty pointer.RayGubernat wrote:I have said it before and will say it again here...
