Well personally I have never owned a recall system. However my cousin raises about 1500-2000 quail a year for themselves, and I had entertained the idea of getting one. He said they work great! Hawks, and other predators love them too!
The problem is the predators get wise to the sound of the recall and ambush the quail. Idunno.. that was enuf to deter me for the time being.

Don't let me deter you though.. you should get advice from someone who has had experience with them.

They work great, you can do a search for plans on here and should be able to find tons of info. PrairieFire is right about the predators but anytime you have prey your going to have predators. Its a fact of life and you have to manage them as best you can.

This is a little off topic, but I found it amusing.. I'll share since it has to do with quail and predators.

We build our own surrogators for quail. They cost us about $70 compared to Quail Restoration Tech's $1800. We don't need the heat and extra gadgetry since we raise them inside with heat lamps until they are at least 2 weeks old. Then we put them into our surrogators. Anyways, my cousin on his first batch of surrogators and quail used regular 'chickenwire' for the sides instead of smaller squared more expensive wire. (about 1/2 inch) He went out to fill the feeders and waterers one morning to find a HUGE bullsnake plumped up with several of his quail. He said it must have been in there all week. He was'nt impressed with my laughter.

I wonder if the quail could be considered "live stock?"

OK some to keep off topic. How did you do the $70 surigator? Pics and plans would be great. Our quail population in NW Mo is pretty sad and the farmer I hunt on would be more than willing to allow me to put one one his land. So plans/ pics would be really cool. thanks

I bet you would like free pics and plans.

I might go out to my land today where my surrogators still are. (never picked them up yet)
I will take a pic and post it. They are pretty simple and they work. Keep in mind you have to buy the waterers and feeders and maintain them. (that's not included in the $70 obviously)
