Custom Dog Box for Chev. Avalanche

Post by Orangecrush » Tue Mar 10, 2009 1:54 pm

Does anyone have a Chevrolet Avalanche with a dog box? I'd like to find something that will take up only one cover space so that I can still pack gear under the other two covers? Anyone? Anyone?

Not sure how much you want to spend, but check this spot out: http://patriotdogboxes.com/index.htm

Clayton is a real nice guy, he'll make it to your specs if that's what you're looking for

I have an avalanche and made a box like what you are talking about. I don't have pictures but will get some tonight and post them up. Basically I took the first panel out and made the box to replace that panel so it would be a tight seal and not let rain/dust in. So the lenght of my box is the length of the panel, I could have just made a square box, but I didn't think it would be wide enough so I decided to make the box sit under the second panel about 4 or 5 inches. The main part of the dog box is about 5 inches taller than the panels so kind of makes an L shape that sits under and sticks out. My dog box sits on a "drawer" so that I can pull it out and put my luggage in the back. If I need to then I can take all the panels out turn my box side ways and still get another dog crate in if I wanted.
I will get pictures and try to get them posted.

That is exactly what I was thinking of doing. I'd love to see your pics. Thanks!

Grew up in a little town in SW Kansas called Greensburg. I've been in the Edmond/Oklahoma City area for 10 years.

Just wondering how close you would be. Live in Nebraska, anyway,

I think you have the idea on what I did. Made it from 3/4" plywood then I coated it with fiber glass resign and then painted it. Coating it with resign will keep the wood solid for years to come.

the box with is somewhere around 24" I think the panels were like 19". Your L shape piece probably won't have to be as tall as mine since you might not have a drawer that will make your box sit up so high, which should give your dog some room. You probably could get away with just making the box a rectangle but when I head for home my dog usually stays in the box during hunting season and I wanted to give him room to stretch ect....
Good luck.

Can you provide all of the dimensions for me. Also, did you put any bracing on the inside? Is it insulated?

I took the pictures yesterday and was going to measure, but of course I got off track and completely forgot. I will get you measurements for it. I didn't insulate the box, was going to but after I used it a couple times I realized that it sets inside the back of the avalanche and is covered so it is out of the wind and elements so I didn't . I didn't brace it either, I would say that it is heavy and if I were to build another I would probably use 1/2" ply and use bracing inside to help strengthen it up.
I will try and get them to you asap....

Orangecrush,
the Box is 43" long, 28" tall. The side lower part is 26" while the top part is 19 3/4. The back then you can adjust for any height. Like I said mine sits on a 3" slide in the back of my box so you can just measure and adjust that height to what you want.
This makes a nice solid fit on the sides and to the front/back. Never had any snow/rain get inside. This is for a 2002 avalanche by the way, but I am pretty sure the panels never have changed sizes.
Let me know if you need anything else!

Forgive my ignorance, but what is "fiber glass resign " and where do you get it? What is the brand name of the product?
I need to build a weatherproof box for my 4-wheeler.

I asked the same question when my neighbor told me the same thing. Resign is the liquid stuff you use with fiberglass. Go to walmart or hardware store and find the fiberglass repair kits and just get the resign and paint it on like paint. Stuff stinks so make sure you are in a vented area.

Just FYI, it's "resin," not resign.
