Finest living writers in our world

Post by Scott Linden » Wed Aug 19, 2009 9:03 pm

So, who is filling the void left by Babcock, etc.? In the world of bird hunting, who are your favorite author/writers? The folks whose articles you go to immediately when the magazine arrives in the mailbox ... the page in the anthology you open that new book to whether it's chapter one or not. Who would you most want to share a bottle of single-malt/cold beer/fine pinot noir and great literary conversation?

Mine have all passed. Gene Hill or George Byrd Evans were the two I thought were the greatest. Kind of lost now as to who is even good.

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I don't read a lot of the periodicals, but I do read a lot of literature. And when it comes to writing about bird hunting, there is no finer piece IMHO than a short by Thomas McGuane entitled "Flight."

It was published in Esquire decades ago, but can also be found in his collection of shorts called "To Skin A Cat." If you enjoy the outdoors, and you enjoy reading... pick it up, you won't regret it.

Man any time I can catch a Pat Mcmanus story, I can never put him down.

When I mention that I once wrote some for what was then known as "the big three" outdoors magazines, no one ever asks if I know or knew anyone but McManus.

(And, no, I don't.)
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

We are all very lucky to being living at a time when there are so many great writers. My absolute favorite would be Mike Gaddis, who I was introduced to by folks on this forum. Ben O. Williams would be a close second.
Thanks for a great topic!!!
