Let's Help Rick Pick His Pup *PICTURES*

Post by vols fan » Sun Oct 04, 2009 6:50 pm

Rick has got his pick narrowed to 5 or 6. Just thought you all might want to chime in to help confuse him even more. Haha. The picture were taken this afternoon. The puppies 6 1/2 weeks old. Still have 4 left if anyone is interested. Thanks for looking.

Which one was moving around the best early on? Which one moves the best now? Which one has the most "hustle"? Have any of them shown that they are more dependent or more cooperative?

From the pics I choose Fabian of the males and Put Put and Tara of the females. But what can you tell strictly from a pic.

We need more information to make this really interesting.
I start out liking looks ( large patches, deep liver color, solid head, white background to patch area, etc.) Then, once the eyes open and the personality shows the selection changes or narrows down. Give us some information on their personality. Who strike out to explore on their own and how far? Who follows and never leads? Who carries things around in their mouth? Who stalks the other puppies? When placed in a totally new and unfamiliar place who is the first to explore? Who was the first to lock up on the wing? Who consistently locks up on the wing. Who is willing to bring back an object you throw for it? What happens when unexpected things happen? ( you drop a food pan, a door slams, you trip and fall, a car engine starts, etc.) When walking, who attacks you foot to play? How does the puppy react when you gently kick the dog away? Add anything else you think is helpful.

Ken, just poking some fun at Rick.As to who goes exploring ,it is always Mini and Tara that i have to keep my eye on. Mini was on top of the wood pile this afternoon about 3 feet off the ground before she jumped . Didn't phase her at all.She and Putt Putt do the stalking but all carry things in their mouth. This was the first day with wing and Mini,Putt Putt ,Tara ,Benny, Fabion andNugget all pointed their first time seeing it.None show any fear at anything as i dropped the feed pan yesterday and all came running to see what was going on.Today a motorcycle went by and they ran to the fence to see.Anyway ,just seeing if we can help since pick 2-8 are all wanting to see what he will do. I can tell from your postings that you like tara. I think Fabian looks like Fritz in those pictures. I would agree that I would pick based on what they are acting like, with a little basic conformation evaluation mixed, and just the right amount of gut instinct!!!!

If I lived closer, the pup that I think would go home with me is Jack, he seems intrested in different stuff and I like his looks. But hey thats me. Living in New Mexico folks around here are lacking in knowledge on Good Hunting Dogs. SO we are still with out a hunting buddy Beautiful pups any hunter would be proud to own 1 of those.

Yes,Jack is Jackson. He points cats really well.Just had to get the wing out one time. They are mad right now since they can't go out in the rain. What a blast they are.

Well....Rick looked at them (forever) and his comment was this....He said it is always like this when you have a really good litter, everyone likes a different puppy. We get sell our pups according to when we receive deposits and we will secretly have our own personal favorites of course. One litter several yrs ago, everyone came and picked and the pup I liked the very best from the start was the one still here. So Tony, guess it is a real good litter:) He said it was narrowed down to about 4.....

Tony,
I also was poking fun at Rick. Picking an exceptional puppy is like buying a Lottery ticket. You have your favorite numbers, your rituals, you rub the lucky rabbits foot, put your money down and walk away with the ticket. However, with the puppy you love it no matter how it turns out because it was your choice, made on things you like. Any way I was trying to make the decision harder for Rick by overwhelming him with information. Some of it smoke and some helpful.

So… What size play pen are the puppies free to run in? Who strikes out for the far fence line? Who was the first to run the fence line when first let out? Who sits back and watches the other puppies before deciding to join or not to join the others? Are any possessive of their toys? Who is the most vocal? Who is the quiet one? Who is vocal when traveling in the truck/car? Who curls up and goes to sleep when the car/truck?

First blush, I like Tera.

One of my best dogs was the guy that sat back and just watched. He was a thinker...Always laying across the food bowl, and last to get finished. So they do not always have to be the most active or far runner:) He turned out to be a calm dog that was 100% birddog when turned loose.

Ive had the same experience a couple of times as Brenda describes. I am really convinced you can tell little bout what a pup will be at eight weeks. I would pick the one that looks good or is the color you like just as much as the attitude you like as it will surely change by the time they start to mature.

My avatar dog was the last pup out of my last litter,he has his Senior Hunter Title. My pick pup has developed more slowly. You never know . After having them out for 2 hours this afternoon, my # has gone back up to 6. They change daily. Mini, Fabion and Prissy stalk everything they see.Mini and Tara are the two that are AWOL, i find them in the weeds at the other end of the house.Benny watches all thats going on,reminds me of my Dougie at that age.Squince is my daughters fav,so was Dougie so maybe she knows more than i. Go figure......Tony

Have had pups only inthe side yard(50x50)until this afternoon and put them in the big dog yard ( 100x 200). Boy did they love it.All had a great time but once again Mini was the one to the woods and into it all. Pups were exploring the whole backyard, doing a lot of stalking on each other.I'm glad i don't have to pick, will most likely take the last one if any are left. Will post some more pics soon. Tony

Rick, when you come back i think there will be 1 more you will consider. Boy, ain't this fun.Don't let Brenda talk you into one, we know who she likes. They all just fell asleep on me, had to wake them to put them up for the night.See them at 6.00 to let them out to poop, like clockwork.Tony

CONFIRMED. when i counted pups last night Benny was on his way home with Rick. It was a toss up all the way till we loaded up in the truck. I know i saw brakelights 2-3 times thinking he may be comjng back to trade for Jackson, Minnie,Tara or Nugget.I think the 15 % restocking fee probably kept him going on.He's a looker. Good choice Rick. Tony

I don't think any of us picked Nugget but I will make a bet she becomes one of the best in the field. She looks mischevies and ready to get after anything that moves. I kind of had an idea she would be my pick if I could see the whole litter in person. Keep tract of what order the pups go in and maybe a little about why.
