first hunt with year old GSP

Post by jfreeman GSP » Sun Feb 28, 2010 10:10 pm

I would like some of you'lls experienced opinions on taking a year old pup on its first hunt
for wild pheasants. I have been told that a wounded wild rooster can spur or oterwise hurt
the pup and make him where he will be a muncher so as to never have that happen even on
quail, or possibly not even want to retrieve. any experiences along this line or advice would
be helpful.
Thanks
Jimmy

I was taking my pup before he was a year old. Just have fun with it, if your worried about making a bad shot leaving a potentially harmful encounter for your dog, don't shoot. If you only shoot a bird that he holds point on and doesn't flush the bird, you should be able to get pretty close to the bird. Or you could oversize the shot your using to ensure a kill. Or take a camera instead. Just some thoughts.

I suppose it's possible that a rooster could spur your dog and scare him enough to affect him but I've been pheasant hunting for a long time and I've never had that happen over the course of 5 or 6 young dogs.

I agree. Prolly about the same odds as getting hit by lightening.

I like twofeathers answer as well. Don't shoot unless you are pretty sure of a kill. In fact, that's the sportsmanlike thing to do anyway.

Hunt the pup. Make it FUN!! It'll go fine.

Take your dog & go kill some Pheasants. Like someone else already said- only shoot birds that he POINTS.
Shoot 6's and anything you hit should be dead.

May all your dog's points be productive & your arrows avoid all timber

I wouldn't worry at all. Have a great time.
