How did you come up with your kennel name?

Post by Hondo » Tue Jul 27, 2010 1:10 am

I'm curious as to how many of you came up with your kennel names. There are some very creative names and I was just curious as to how you came up with your kennel name.

I've been thinking of names to use myself and have been having a terrible time coming up with something good.

I named mine after the small town that was overtaken in a war a long time ago, and now sits deserted.

Thus Rocklane Kennels was born... A close friend has a kennel named Dancin' Dogs.. That I always liked

Hondo,
We came up with the name Pine Creek Grouse Dog Trainers because of just where we wanted the kennel to be located along Pine Creek in North central Pa, and because we wanted it understood that our training is for a certain specialized type of dog. We also wanted it understood that we are not a breeding or boarding kennel. Ours is a very specialized training business, we house dogs for only that purpose.

As a poor kid growing up in the South I would pick cotton for extra money. Picking "high cotton" was a lot easier on your back because you could pick it standing upright. Because of that fact "high cotton" has always had a special meaning to me. High Cotton Kennel is located in what is still a major cotton producing area of Alabama.

For anyone that has been in southern Kansas in the summer, my kennel name is pretty self explanatory.

CEK Kennels was named after my initials. It is not C.E.K. although pronounce it. If anyone can guess my middle name they are better than most and probably deserve a steak dinner.

Not to be disrespectful to anyone but could those of you guessing Chris' middle name just send him a message. I'm hoping to keep this on topic.

BTW: It has been really interesting to see how many of you have come up with your kennel names. Please keep the kennel names and background stories coming.

Thanks,

Hondo

My dad bought a piece of property when I was a kid that had a hand carved sign at the entrance to the drive that simply read OAK RIDGE and when I started to have coon and coyote hounds I used that name as a kennel name for all of my pups, as I moved on to retrievers and eventually my GSP I just kept using the name OAK RIDGE, my step mother wanted to get rid of the sign so I snagged it and am saving it till I find that special place.

My oldest GSP is a "Willows" dog. I'm in MN so sticking with a "wood name" was an easy decision. I spent many summers & falls enjoying the mixed forests with tall pines in northern MN. At one of my grandparents' lake cabins in northern MN you look down through a hillside of tall norway pines to see the lake. The other grandparents' lake cabin was built by my grandfather amongst a number of tall pines. After clearing most of 160 acres for farming my great grandfather left about a 10 acre stand of tall pines in the NE corner of the original homestead. My seasonal residence is located on "Tall PInes" road. I thought about other names involving the word prairie because that is where we spend most of our time hunting with the dogs but when I hit upon Tall PInes it was a natural fit. Of course I did a google search to check for other kennels with the name Tall Pines before finalizing the decision.

Got my 1st gsp in the 80's, my favorite basketball team was the "Hoosiers" and Bobby Knight. 1990 I got a little gsp and named him Hoosier Buddy, he and I passed time in our favorite activity of watching Hoosier basketball and having popcorn. To say that was a neat experience would be an understatement.

The Hoosier basketball has not been good since they fired Bobby but them Hoosier Shorthairs are winners and the future looks very bight.

Ourdogs came from Brittany so it was a natural to use Britts DeBreton, French for Britts from Brittany. Now that we have this new breed of French britts I guess it should be changed but my first Britts all had French dogs closeup in the pedigree. Maybe this is why it is hard to think of the French Britts as a new breed since they are exactly what I started with a few years back.

I have always preferred to hunt grouse to other types of upland birds. My normal hunting areas are in the mountains, so Upper Ridge Brittany came easy.

My kennel name has a lot of different reasons behind it!

My last name is Cherry
Weimaraners are the color of stones.
Cherrystone clams are one of my FAVORITE foods to eat! I have a lot of happy memories eating them as a kid both cooked and raw. And we used to dig them ourselves in RI and MA.

I seemed to spend an awful lot of time trekking over the moors with my dogs here in Scotland so I took the Kennel name of "Trekmoor."

I picked up my family and moved to the U.P. to hunt the aspen stands...commonly referred to as "popple thickets" in my native Wisconsin, or should I say "popple tickets."

I primarily hunt grouse and my foundation dogs are definitely those magic creatures known by the deceased Mr. Spiller as "Grouse Dogs."

Put them together and drop the popple = Aspen Thicket Grouse Dogs.

Being a new to this sight and having just whelped my first litter, I have always wondered how some of the kennel names out there came to be.... great topic.

I picked "Traditions" because of all the great memories with my dad. I hope my kids and grandkids will keep it going.

the Pine forest of north Florida or as use locals call them the Pineywoods.
