Post by gittrdonebritts » Thu Aug 11, 2011 8:37 am

Anyone on here ever foster dogs ? I just started with a 3 yr old 100lb Mastiff Female and I think my fostering career is over cause my wife fell in love with her and we adopted her  :D :D

LOL Well , you can't keep all you foster. I try to foster JRTs that show up at the pound. I have a 100 stories of the behaviour of poorly bred JRTs,

lol, never get attached is the rule joe...i have fostered dogs for almost 16 years now..i only do it in the months of nov, dec, jan though because my husband is off all winter so i have more help with training ect...i also transport for local shelters here and michigan almost every weekend in the summer bringing dogs to foster homes..i have fell in love with MANY of them but if you keep just one its less space for a foster dog is how i look at it and that keeps me going..i use my own money to alter them, give them their vaccines and preventatives and feed them..i usually take 4 fosters at a time which gives me 6 dogs..i love it and will do it till the day i die.. have fun with the mastiff, they are awesome dogs, giant teddy bears for the most part but step away after they drink cause you will get a shower  it reminds me of the bull mastiff i had here a few years ago, my husband slipped and fell in his slobber water after he drank and i never laughed so hard in my life, hubby didnt think it was so funny for some reason  .....ruth

Yup, I've had over 50 Brittanys pass through my doors over the years. We got involved to adopt 1, which we did (our 4th foster dog), but once I got the competition bug and we bought more dogs (we have 4 now, but are expanding to 6 next month) and started doing a bit of traveling, we stopped fostering.

Those that stay are called foster failures........

Have fostered several GSPs & Vizslas as well as overnighted quite a few as they passed through the areas on their way to new homes or rescues. Never had one that we ended up adopting although came close a couple of times. The longest foster was one of the MO 75 puppy mill rescues that stayed 11 1/2 months. It was pretty hard to see her go but she found the perfect home and I get updates all the time. Have too many of my own to take in another foster right now but will probably have a pointer passing through in the next week or so if we can work out transportation from OK. Anyone coming from OK to St. Louis soon?

We foster for the American Brittany Rescue. They have a rule that new fosters cannot adopt their first foster dog. That helps you not get attached. We have had 5-6 come through in the past couple of years.
