Invisible fence

Post by ACooper » Sat Oct 08, 2011 4:17 pm

I have never used an invisible fence, but looks like one of my girlfriends mutts can escape from Alcatraz...SO thinking of giving it a try for him. Any suggestions? Pros? Cons? He isn't a high drive dog, just athletic and likes to roam, so I am thinking the invisible fence might be right up his alley.

My whole neighborhood is filled with them. I have never seen a dog run through them, even when someone is walking a dog in the street. However, my neighbors Porti has figured out that if his collar is not on, which is very rare, he can cross. Many other dogs after a while just stay within the fence even with the collar off.

People with terriers say once in a while they go through.

I have had both the ones with the in-ground wire and wireless.
Both work real well.

But my setter learned that if he ran and jumped at full speed by the kids trampoline he would not set off the collar. With ones with the wire, if they get past the wire a ways they are home free.

So we went to the wireless one. On them the collar continues to go off for about 20 seconds if they are outside the range of the transmitter. You should have seen how surprise he was when he pulled is stunt the first time with wireless fence :D

We have had not problems since.

Love our petsafe wireless. As long as you use the flags and teach them where their limits are they are wonderful. Friend slapped the collar on his dog without set the boundary on his wireless, the dog started out of his garage and got lit up. Needless to say it took forever to get the dog to venture out of the garage agian. The wireless ones I think can cover up to a 1/2 acre.

I love ours. Not the Invisible Fence brand name though, they are not a good company to deal with. Dumped theirs and went with another system that works just as good and I can control all the settings for the wire field and the collar strength without calling a tech.
My dogs won't leave even if they don't have their collars on. Took about a month to train each one. Follow the steps and it does work.

I first looked at the invisible fence brand, now I am thinking about the petsafe wireless, looks like it could be better for what I need.

I tripped over one once...

Mt petsafe in ground for stubborn dogs usually works great, however after a sever lightning strike and the colder weather mine shuts off. I replaced the fenced as the old one was blown apart by the blast of electricity, fuses popped etc. So I am now going to run new wire around my 3 acre dog lot. Other than that I have not one complaint.

I used the petsafe one for years (the wired, in ground one) with no complaints. I did wind up upgrading my collars from the regular one to the pro series collars as I have one dog who would stick his neck out into the "warning zone" to see if everything was working, and if not, leave. the pro collar gave him a progressive correction until he stepped away from the warning zone.

Anyway, used one for years, really liked it. I also had the indoor units that work with the petsafe wired fence. I was able to protect the cat food & litter box with those. They worked great too.

We have an invisible fence from Pet Stop. It encloses about an acre and a half. I can't say enough good things about it. Our GSP has a very high prey drive and even if she is chasing a rabbit or a cat she won't cross the line. We can even let her out without her fence collar on and she will respect the boundary.

We have had the Petsafe wireless for 10 years, if I remember right. It is even a reconditioned unit and it has worked great. We have had 1 high drive lab & 4 GSP's and no problems. We did have a problem recently with the unit shocking the dogs when the power went off, called Petsafe and they sent out a new one right away and had us send in the old one back when we got the new one, no cost.

Well I am going to install the underground fence for her... that counts as training right?

On a side note Karl, have they got my new fence up along the road yet? I have been gone a few weeks.

I used Invisible Fence with our GSP and it worked really well. I made sure to do the training right by the book - even took a little longer to be safe, and we never had any problems. After seeing our boy sitting nicely on the lawn, many people in our neighbourhood asked us about it, and then installed it!

I'll run by there and check. I have been getting home after dark lately, but will go that way in the morning. We have a second adjuster coming to the house this Saturday to meet with our contractor.......hopefully we can come to an agreement and get to work on our repairs. Are you going to rebuild?
