Best Bedding for Crates
Best Bedding for Crates
My dogs sleep in the garage in their crates at night. My problem is - I can't find good quality bedding that can be washed and rewashed that will last.
Bought three pads during Black Friday Feeding Frenzy and already two of the pads are torn.
Anybody found the "secret dog pad" that really lasts?
Thanks for the Advice in advance

Be wary of the man in the tattered old hunting coat with the bony pointer and the well worn side by side, he'll outshoot you every day.

Are your dogs chewers?

I use cheap blankets, if anything.
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.
Re: Best Bedding for Crates
we use a small blanket in the crates at night cause they just curl up and go to sleep BUT if i crate them in the day to go out i dont put any bedding with them cause they will get revenge by eating it  ....ruth

The first time they chew up a blanket & swallow some of it you will probably regret it,Might not ever happen but not worth the risk to me.

I don't have straw or hay anymore so I use our old newspapers. They do a pretty good job and are easy to clean out and replenish when needed. then they all go into the compost bin.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Old towels and sheets. When they get dirty, I just throw them into the washer. If the dogs chew them up too badly, I tossed them into the trash.

Re: Best Bedding for Crates
It worked for me because my dog kept chewing on his padding. It worked so well I cut another piece out for my travel kennel, now my dog doesn't slide around all over the place cause he can get a grip on it. One pad will yield a handful of kennel sized pieces, just cut with a utility razor and fold the cut over a corner of a bench, keep cutting and the more you can bend it the easier it gets. I hope that makes since, anyways having two people help will make a big difference, those things are not light! Now I keep the horse stall padding in there but also throw in an old fleece blanket. If you do this you may want to cut the string out of the edges if your dogs chew on things a lot.mtjim wrote:That was gonna be my next project.isonychia wrote:horse stall padding cut to fit = miracle, won't keep em warm though

Bought two pads at Cabela's but don't remember what they are called. So far so good on not getting chewed up.

I use the synthetic teeing material used on golf course driving ranges.
Most courses that have a range will have some old mat material. Right at an inch thick, rubber backed with an astro turf type surface.
Lasts for ever, easy to clean. If its going to get extremely cold just had a little hay or straw on top of the mat.

If I have a dog that chews the bedding they don't get any. I've known too many dog's who have gotten obstructions from eating bedding. They have to earn it back.
If the dog is a chewer and must have bedding you can use shavings.
Once mine are good with bedding I use a nice thick bathroom rug. They last and wash easily.

These are great: http://www.lcsupply.com/LCS-Brown-Crate ... tinfo/BCP/
They fit inside a Vari-Kennel or similar crate perfectly. I use them in the truck crates during hunting season, but usually take them out in the summer. The covers are tough, wash easily, and if the foam gets worn out before the cover does you can just replace the foam. My dogs often scratch, paw, and dig at the pads before laying down - typical bedding behavior - and after a year of use they are still like new.
They are not chew-proof and probably not the best choice for a teething puppy, but the Cordura material is just about the toughest stuff out there that I've found. With 7 dogs and 5 of them living in the house, if it's one thing I know it's dog beds. My living room is carpeted with them, and crossing the room is like walking on the moon...
But if they are in the garage, you wanna go cheap, and don't mind a little mess, good ol' fashioned wheat straw works good too - it's warm, soft, dry, naturally absorbent, and easy to manage. A bale will last you all winter and costs about $6.
