That pointed toe is fascinating. Of course we know that many genes are passed on but that characteristic? Fascinating.

Re: Photo of the Day
There is a page in Snakefoot- the making of a champion by Robert Wehle that shows two pictures of dogs hooked up to a pulling team with Mr Mcgoo in the lead position, in the two pics are a mother in one up on Mcgoo's back and the other with her daughter in the exact same pose on Mcgoo's back. Pretty neat.
Wish i could attach it, would have to scan the book.....
In the above of my dog, that is her great great grandfather....

Re: Photo of the Day
We had the dogs out again on Friday 12/2.
A hen pheasant point.
Staunch point on the fence for a bit. She then moved forward a few feet and we took the opportunity to call her back into the field. Not sure if it was a productive point or not, because the other side of the fence is private land, so we didn't have the opportunity to work it out without trespassing. Boy, did I get the color different on these 2 pics.

See we don;t always hunt steep sage brush covered rock piles out west. Every now and again we have to put them in the thick stuff and put the power steering back into them and install a governor.

Re: Photo of the Day
Took Indy out for his first real hunt today on his own. Really wanted to get him into some quail. But we are having problems finding them even with experienced dog. I didn't get him into any quail.
But we made a swing through some prairie grass up above a couple of plum thicket draws.
He pointed a rooster in this pic. I hit is lightly twice, it came down running. We looked and looked but couldn't run it down.
Would have been his first wild bird shot over him,
For 6 months I was very happy with the way he ran and worked cover. Wish we would have found some quail, and I would have held up my end of the bargin on the rooster.

There really are some incredible photos in this thread. Elkhunter and DGFavor, I especially enjoyed your contributions above.
Here's me taking my new boy out to chase a few quail. I put him in the truck before the shooting started. He chased down some birds and didn't show any fear or apprehension around them. So far, so good.

Stoney yesterday - there is about a half dozen hungarians literally right at his back feet in this pic like he was in 'em before he realized he was in 'em. Has the "oh shxx" look in his eyes! :
They let me walk almost right up to him then startled me so bad I botched the flush photo and barely caught up with one of 'em. Really hard for the cam to autofocus on a streaking brown object against a brown background:
Bugs on a combo sharptail/hungarian point sharing a little patch of sage:

Ruger and Sadie sharing a find, I did not even see Ruger at first since he was in ambush position!
Woody pointing a single from a LONG WAYS....
Best part of the night was walking over into a saddle and finding Sadie on point with Woody on point below her, just a single to end the day.
Woody still kinda rusty at the whole retrieve part of the game, hence you can see him in the background still looking for it...

Out this morning. 2 roosters, with one in a corner pocket that almost got overlooked. He flushed wild. Another later flushed under my feet. 4 hens seen after that, with points off 2 of them.
A lot of times, this is as much of my pointing dog as I get to see, in this cover. And autofocus mode always picks the foreground weed sticks to make crisp and clear! (Brandi on point.)
Barely got Brandi in the frame on this one!
Roxi & Brandi on point. Not sure if Brandi is backing or got in the scent too. Dogs were running pretty close together at the time they hit this one. I was too dang close for my zoom lens to get both of them in the frame, so it's taken from the GoPro.
Brandi's half of the above point. Kind of a constipated look when she slammed on her brakes. The phez don't give me much time to work around the dog though, to get a better angle.

Gotta switch to manual focus in the thick stuff. I switch to manual then hunt thru the weeds with my viewfinder and focus ring trying to really lock on an eye if I can since that's what brings life to the shot usually. Depending on the lens your depth of field for sharp focus may only be a matter of a few inches and I think it makes for some cool shots. And autofocus mode always picks the foreground weed sticks to make crisp and clear!
I don't know what the right way to do anything is but what I like to do when I'm hunting and shooting pics "on the fly" is just put my camera in Action Auto mode so I don't have to do any exposure thinking on the fly, put it in continuous drive, continuous autofocus. When the dog is on point and everything is static, I hold down my manual focus override button which on my camera is under my right thumb and manually focus on the dog (on the eye if I can) to get crisp shots - when the birds flush and things start moving, I release the manual override and the cam switches back to continuous auto and I just start firing 5 frames/second and praying. Sometimes get a shot or two I like.

Just grab the focus ring at any time for instant manual override. Use the "M/A" position of the M/A - M focus mode selector on the lens.

Re: Photo of the Day
Yup, that's the way my buddies D90's work I think. Personally I don't like it as well as the button system my Sony uses as I tend to continue holding the lens barrel/zooming as I'm firing and want to be sure the thing is autofocusing. With the Nikon system, I think I'd futz it up continuing to manually override the autofocus hanging onto the lens. More intuitive for me to release my thumb from the override button and continue working the lens but like anything, you adapt to using what you got!Just grab the focus ring at any time for instant manual override. Use the "M/A" position of the M/A - M focus mode selector on the lens.
