First crack at sketching in awhile.
Actually, this is my second, not first, crack at it in awhile. It's not finished, but at 4:48 am, I'm pooped and am going to pick up on it tomorrow.

Stoney: That is some truly fine work. Look forward to seeing the end product. Other than the tail it looks a lot like the old style prints of England.
Very nice.
Thanks, Rick

Re: First crack at sketching in awhile.
Here's the original photo of the Pointer: http://i888.photobucket.com/albums/ac90 ... 87ead4.jpg
Just one. I haven't drawn in awhile. I did one before this for a friend, but it didn't come out like he deserved it to. It's amazing how the more color and detail that's in a photo, how my ability to sketch it really deteriorates. you give me a liver Shorthair and it will come out like crap. But, if I have white Pointer then it comes out half decent, like the one above. The first one I did that didn't come out well was a real heavy-ticked Shorthair with some big spots on him. What gets to me most is that the Shorthair is really a nice looking dog, but I just couldn't get him down right... not much detail.
This is the drawing of the Shorthair. I may go back and try to redo it or touch it up.

Re: First crack at sketching in awhile.
No joke, man. That's awesome. I wish I could detail like that. I do a lot of shading to compensate for lack of detail - kind of a sleight of hand, I guess. If I could detail a coat like that I'd be working on a setter right now. I know what you mean about seeing only the faults, too. When you set over a sketch for so long it all kinda starts running together and you can't tell what's nice and what's not and, at least with me, you start to think it all looks bad.
Here's the finished draft of the Pointer.

I use to love drawing. This is one I kept from highschool art class--ugh like '88 or '89. Must've been some kind of scale enlargement. It's not all that great, in looking back on it, but it makes me think maybe I should go practice some and see what I can do. Your post is a little bit inspiring for me and I have plenty of empty sketch books laying around.

88 or 89 just ain't that long ago. I spent eight years in the air Force and got out in 73. Dang, she's a young one!postoakshorthairs wrote:88 or 89....did they have colored pencils back then or was everything black and white?wems2371 wrote:Very nice!

I like to draw and wish I had more time to do it. I love to sculpt and get more satisfaction out of it. I've sold two of this bronze but they are not cheap at $2100. Bronze is very expensive to cast. Is sculpting easy?? Yeah, if you're just pounding clay together. 3 dimensional work is not easy but when it comes together it's awesome. Get some clay and try it. Gotta build an armature first.Stoneface wrote:Hey, what is scupting like? It looks so doggoned difficult, but I've heard that it's a lot easier than it looks.SCT wrote:Another view in bronze.

I used to do clay modelling and then fired the better results....... Much the same applies to oil painting ........ most of them should have been "fired" too !
Clay is very awkward stuff to work with ,it has very little strength when still wet and needs supporting as you work.

Wow you sure have some artistic folks here. That statue is very good.
Some are lucky as she is and makes a good living at it, anything I draw looks like doo doo.
Now if some did a shorthair....
Not I but my little brother has drawn some fantastic stuff, one he did was a cover of a comic book the incredible hulk. I have a cousin lives out Temecula way does art work, she has done the posters for the wine and ballon fest in napa valley, used her daughter as a model one year, I have a print and a comforter with that one on it.Anybody else do any drawing?

Ok... just curious... but what kind of $$$ would it cost to have a sculpture of your own dog done?

Wow, I didn't realize we had so many artists on the forum! Those are all great! I can't draw or sculpt but I am able to get my artistic energy out through fly tying (unfortunately it's not dog related but....) Here's one of my favorite pike flies I made....it's a perch imitation.

Re: First crack at sketching in awhile.
Here's a photo of a drawing I did for Mike Branscum. Nice work everyone.
Re: First crack at sketching in awhile.
Depends what size you wanted, and if you wanted a head bust or full body on point. Probably around $50,000 for a lifesize down to $2,000-$3,000 for a small head bust. You could get it done for much cheaper but I don't know if it would look like your dog (or a dog of any breed). Bronze sculpture is just plain expensive. Kiln dried water based clay would be less.SHORTFAT wrote:Ok... just curious... but what kind of $$$ would it cost to have a sculpture of your own dog done?

There are some talented people here on GDF. I have absolutely zero talent when it comes to anything artistic. I really appreciate it when I see it though.
