what's the beep function on a e-collar really for?
I have a sport dog e-collar. It's has nick and continuous stimulation and beep. Is that beep function supposed to be used as a recall or as a warning before you stimulate the dog? Thanks in advance for any replies!

Used for what ever you train your dog to do with the tone. A warning let's them get away with unwanted behavior and is not really useful.

One function is to locate the dog or indicate that the dog is on point. If you plan on using it this way, I would hesitate to use it as a correction marker. You don't want the dog thinking it's going to be corrected for holding point.

When you say indicate that the dog is on point do you mean using it like it is a "clicker" to mark the point and let him know he's doing good? I thought it might be used to locate the dog but its such a low level tone unless he was within a few yards I wouldn't be able to hear it.

Does your collar have a beeper, which is a separate piece of equipment or a tone function? Tone function is used to mark behavior. Beeper is loud and has various settings.

Re: what's the beep function on a e-collar really for?
It's not a different device, its a "tone" setting not a actual beeper sorry about wording that wrong. Using it for marking behavior makes sense thanks a lot for the help!
Re: what's the beep function on a e-collar really for?
I've heard of people using the vibrate function on some collars as positive reinforcement, so I don't see any reason why the beep couldn't be used that way too....as long as you don't have something like invisible fence at home where the tone is not positive reinforcement.
As far as using tone as a warning....if you feel the need to warn, you should probably be correcting instead...it'll keep you from having to warn over and over and over again and will prevent the dog from ever increasingly pushing that envelope. JMHO

A benign reminder tho more a marketing ploy.

I use it as a recall. If you blow a whistle or yell to recall a dog while you are hunting wild pheasants---they'll blow out of there before you even get close  The tone works good as a low volumn recall that only the dog can hear.

I use the Dogtra collar with the pager....which is only used for one thing....to bring the dog around...back to the front. I like it because only my dog can feel it.....there is no "beep" for other dogs in the area to hear...and I can handle the dog when needed without voice or whistle....quietly....which is all I want to hear when I hunt....the quiet.

I use it as a test button to make sure the collar is on.

I use it to indicate i've taken a new direction or like singing out or whistling to the dog. Nice silent over this way..... Never on point or around a bird.

Use it for the same purpose.
Re: what's the beep function on a e-collar really for?
my dog responds to any command needed by the tone, just as if I had used one of the other settings. but really do not have to use it very much.

Well... have ya ever been watchin' tv and heard a "beep" when someone says a cuss word?.. Dog trainers need lots and lots of "beeps"...

I would never use it as a correction, or warning. If you're going to correct the dog, correct him, don't warn him.
I do think it has value using it as a whistle, as for recall or range shortening. Any command the dog works with by whistle, can be substituted with the collar and you'll hunt far quieter. One beep for whoa, two for no, three for come; same as a whistle.

I use it to call in a deaf dog . ( medically not just ignoring me )

Re: what's the beep function on a e-collar really for?
I like gonehuntin's reply. One beep for a command 2 beeps for another and so on and so. I'm going to work on that and see where it takes me. Everyone else thanks for your input, didn't know the beep could be used in so many ways
Re: what's the beep function on a e-collar really for?
My first collar was a DT Systems mod 300. It had one button with instent shock. I could do it continues or momentary, best collar I ever had. I've never, for some reason, forgot where my thumb was and have never used the wrong thumb!
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!
Re: what's the beep function on a e-collar really for?
I have a very soft dog that does not respond well to electric stimulation. I am very gentle with her, and I use the vibrate/tone for recall. It works great and I'm not yelling or constantly blowing on a whistle... I can quietly and gently work my dog... great tool...

I have the Sportdog Beeper/E-collar also and use the "Run Mode" button as a recall and "locate" button to make the thing shut up when we are just going for a free-run but still want to use the collar for recall!

Re: what's the beep function on a e-collar really for?
If you are in the positive type of camp, you might have a "no reward marker" this could be either tone or vibrate, and verbal whatever you like. Difference between a no reward marker and a correction are that no reward markers can be used IN training, and not just after the dog understands. The NRM HELPs them learn and is not followed by a correction.
Personally I wouldn't want to use a tone sounding NRM though, I dont think. To many other things to confuse for the dog.
