Quill Removal

Post by Hookadooka BirdDogs » Wed Apr 04, 2012 9:53 am

Like to hear some tips on quill removal. I've heard that since quills are hollow they tend to collapse when cut in half, tending to help in their removal and also if twisted counterclockwise when removing they remove easier. Any other comments or suggestions other than avoiding porkies altogether. A "leatherman" is a given to carry when in porky country I would think.

A quill has a hook on the end. I've found one good way is to push he quill through, cut off the hook and pull the shaft out.

I've asked a number of vets if there is a trick, as my dog has gotten 8 porkies, and the best explanation I've gotten is that a quill has what would look like fish scales under a microscope. If you run your hand down a fish one way it's nice and smooth, but if you go the other way, the scales offer resistance. I've been told they don't deflate and they don't have a hook on the end, but it still is easier to push through, as the quills slide through easier than backing out. Just what I've been told on one of my visits to the vet.

It's an old wives tale that they deflate. Just grab em' with a leatherman and pull.

The old tale that the quill is hollow come's from the white part being hollow. The black part is the barb and under a microscope looks like a harpoon. Only way to get them out is to grab on and pull.
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!

Just get a good hold and yank it out quick. Also the sooner the better, as said they work their selves in deeper. Pull em right off.
