miniature German Shorthair Pointer?!
Hello,
This is a weird (but serious) question: my mom was talking to a lady (who owns GSPs, as does my mom--I had two and now have a GWP) the other day who said she read somewhere that there's such a thing as a miniature GSP. Unfortunately, she can't remember where she read it, but thinks it was in some local GSP club newsletter or something. I ran a google but came up empty. Is there such a thing? The lady swears it's true, but I've never heard of such a thing. And if it is true, where does one go about finding such a dog?
Thanks in advance for clearing up this mystery.
Cheers,
Rollick

GSP
As far as I know it would not be eligible for registration. Not AKC approved.
GSP's certainly are though and are they wonderful, have a new litter on the way in a month and am very excited about it.

I have never heard of such a thing but there is a big difference in size in the GSP. I could see how someone would think that is true even if it is not. I have seen a GSP that weighed 85lbs. and I have one that is 35lbs. so that is a big difference.

Ohio is right here.
Alot of those Feild Trial GSP's are a very small and light dog. This makes for a faster dog in the feild.
Where as your GSP's bred for Versatility and foot hunters are lot bigger.
My 7 month old is 23 inches high and 50 pounds. He outweights alot of those feildtrial dogs already but is no where near done growing.

At the fun day I was at last weekend a lady owned a GSP and a brittany, both around 2 years old. Her britt was 15" and about 25 lbs and her GSP was 18" and 30lbs+ (estimate on the weight) she told me that when she bought the dogs that the intention was not for them to be small. They just ended up that way. So theres a mini I guess.

I have a friend with a Brit that is in the 15" range. This brit was neutered and placed in a home as a pet by the breeder because it was out of standard. I believe the standard is 18" min for brits. Ezzy do you know on this? Anyone know what the standard says for gsp's as far as height goes. Obviously the weight can vary.
Not so sure I agree with Ryan on the field trial lines of GSP's being smaller. I have seen more big GSP's running at the trials that have alot of leg and run like no tomorrow. To be honest I havent seen any that are even the height of my brittany and he is at the top of the standard which I believe is 22" tall. Just my experience though.

Yeah, I’ve seen these. They almost look like a jack russell. I saw this one from a fella in Utah while out hunting. I don’t remember his name, but his dogs name was clown…rollick wrote:Hello,

Ryan, I don't believe you didn't notice he was on stilts when they took the pic you saw. They were special built so he could see over the grass in the field. Made him easier to spot from horse back also.

There is a thread on the topic of field trial GSP size over on ModernSportsman.com in the Dogs section.
I can't remember everything, but the general concensus was that most of the winning field trial males were 50-something. That's in trialing shape, not couch-sittin' shape. Hud was the exception, I think at 63 lbs.
Best,

Legitimately there should be no such dog. However, in the world of yorkie-poos, labradoodles, etc., it wouldn't surprise me one bit if a min-pin X GSP breeding took place somewhere - or some sort of concoction as such. :roll:rollick wrote:I ran a google but came up empty. Look for "How Big Are Your Dogs" or something like that in the "Training and Breeding" forum of the Dogs section on Modernsportsman.com forums.

Our last male GSP was on the large size, weighing 85 lbs and 27" at the withers, our female is on the small size at 48lbs and 22". He was the best GSP I ever had. We lost him in April a few weeks shy of his 7th birthday. When they stood side by side it looked as if our frmale was a "mini"............................markerdown

I'm glad this thread was revived. I get to enjoy those beautiful avatar pics. I've had two GSPs and both were about 50 pounds.
Re: miniature German Shorthair Pointer?!
And there is the Braque Francais ( Pyrenees type ). Maybe that is what she was thinking of.

Re: miniature German Shorthair Pointer?!
We had a truebred litter in highschool and I'm pretty sure we kept the runt of the litter. She ended up being in the 30-35lb range, but she was still a true GSP. She scrabbled up a 6ft fence more than once. I was a teen at the time and didn't believe until I saw it. And that's after I heard her scratching on our fence from the neighbors side.
Re: miniature German Shorthair Pointer?!
Same here runt of the litter 35lbs soaking wet. This girl is a bird nut could not ask for more drive or talent.
